School’s out for summer! Congratulations to all of our students for their accomplishments and hard work throughout the year. Hats off to the teachers and staff of Winthrop Public Schools for a very productive school year. Have a safe and healthy summer. See you in September!

Over 200 Winthrop High School students and former students raised more than $5,000.00 for cancer research during last Friday’s Relay for Life Team “For Pete’s Sake”.  Athletic Director Peter Gobiel is a cancer survivor, having been diagnosed 5 years ago with throat cancer. Relay for Life is an annual overnight event at East Boston Memorial Stadium. Great job to all who participated!

We wish all of you a happy and healthy retirement and thank you for your many years of dedication and service to the children of Winthrop Public Schools!

2nd grade student Haven Pereira is playing the role of Marta in the North Shore Music Theatre’s production of The Sound of Music. Great job Haven!

Old Fashioned Family Day at the Beach July 13
Join the Chamber for fun in the sun at Yirrell Beach on Point Shirley! The 16th annual “Old Fashioned Family Day at the Beach” takes place Saturday, July 13 from 11:00 am – 4:00 pm, put on by the Winthrop Chamber of Commerce & Winthrop MarketPlace. The rain date is Sunday, July 14.

The summertime tradition features rides, games, contests, raffles, DJ, and a cookout. Kids will especially enjoy the wave-runner and water slide. Wristbands for the rides are just $5 and are good all day.

No need to pack a lunch as hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hotdogs, and sausages will be grilled on the barbeque. There will also be pizzas and ice cold drinks for sale. Many businesses will also have giveaways, do temporary tattoos, and much more.

Spinning the tunes, DJ Crazy Jeff will be playing great beach music throughout the day. Kids can also play the ball toss and win neat prizes.  Several contests will take place throughout the day, highlighted by the Adult Spelling Bee at 1:00, “Winthrop’s Got Talent” at 1:30, the Hat Contest at 2:00, and the Hula Hoop Competition at 3:00.

The Public Landing at 707 Shirley Street offers free parking, though carpooling and public transportation is strongly encouraged.
There will be lots to do and enjoy, so be sure to bring a camera. ~See you at the beach!
