Winthrop High School student Moriah Goldblatt has been selected to attend the Washington Youth Summit in June at the George Mason University. The summit is a weeklong program on our changing environment. During the week she will have the opportunity to meet with congressional leaders, tour the National Zoo and spend time with key advocates for the environment. Ms. Goldblatt was chosen based on her academic achievements, including her MCAS scores, at Winthrop High School.

Under the direction and guidance of coach Anthony "Butch" Martucci, the Girls' Varsity Hockey Team (the Lady Bulldogs) have won the Northeast Conference Division One Title! Congratulations to our Winthrop students on the team - Nicole Pucillo, Julianna Kennedy, Annie Mahoney, Amanda Cordes, Emma Rudser, Vanessa Vanbuskirk, Flora English, Gretchen Howard, Caroline McKinnon, and Erin O'Leary! Great job!

This spring Parks and Recreation will expand on the Winthrop Youth Lacrosse program as they introduce a more competitive environment for developing players.~ Although the spring lacrosse program will remain at the beginner / developmental level, they will be forming age based teams that will practice regularly and play competitive games against other towns.~ The competition will be age based as most towns we will be playing against field teams in the following age brackets: U9, U11 & U13 (with the "U" meaning "under".~ Although we will try to field teams using similar age restrictions we will allow flexibility as needed.
  • The 2012 season will be offered to both boys and girls.
  • Full equipment will be required
  • Practices will be held 2x per week with at least one game per week
  • We will practice and play using the boys' lacrosse format
  • All players will play an equal amount of time regardless of skill level
  • The number of teams and age levels will be determined based on the level of participation.
  • Team uniforms will be issued
  • The season will run mid April through June
  • The cost of the of the program is TBD but expected to be in the range of $175.00-$225.00
  • Players must currently be in 8th grade OR under
  • Registration deadline is Friday March 9th.
Rich Cifini is heading up this program.  Although he is not looking for any firm commitments at this time, he would ask that any parent who feels their child or children would be interested in the spring lacrosse program send him an email expressing such interest.~ Please include the players age, gender, current grade and whether they have any lacrosse experience whatsoever (again, none required.)
He is coordinating with the Parks and Recreation Department to host an informational meeting about the program where we can discuss the lacrosse program in further detail and answer any questions you may have.

The Winthrop Playmakers are pleased to announce their next production:
Tom Griffin’s The Boys Next Door
featuring Winthrop Residents, Eric Gaynor and Anthony Mullin.

The Boys Next Door is the story of four mentally handicapped men who live in a communal residence in New England with the help of a young social worker who loves his work, but is discovering he is “burned out”. Split into scenes showing the daily lives of these men, there are moments of humor and sadness. The play illustrates how these men are not as different from those designated ‘normal people’ as they would appear- and how much those ‘normal people’ take for granted every day.

Performances will be in the downstairs cabaret style theater on
February 10th, 11th, 17th, & 18th at 8:00 pm with matinees on February 12th & 19th at 3:00 pm.

VOTERS MAY VOTE ABSENTEE OVER THE COUNTER BEGINNING MONDAY, JANUARY 23, 2012
Voters who are unable to vote on election-day because of physical disability, religious beliefs or travel may vote by absentee ballot. If you will be absent from Winthrop for an extended period of time, you may submit a single application for all elections occurring within the year the application is filed.

Applications for absentee ballots may be obtained from the Town Clerk or downloaded from the Town Clerk’s Web Page at www.town.winthrop.ma.us then click Departments and Town Clerk. Applications may be submitted in person or by mail. The voter, or a "family member" (father, mother, sister, brother, son, daughter, grandparent, grandchild, a spouse or person residing in the same household, in-laws, adopting parent or adopted child, stepparent or stepchild, aunt, uncle, niece or nephew), may submit an application. All absentee ballot applications must be signed by the voter or a family member under the penalty of perjury before an absentee ballot will be made available.

Applications for absentee ballots must be received by the Town Clerk before 12:00 noon the day before an election. (A voter who is admitted to a health care facility after noon of the fifth day before an election may apply for a ballot up until the close of the polls and may request to have the ballot delivered.) Absentee ballots generally are available three weeks before an election.

• Effective parent strategies if a child is an aggressor, target or witness to bullying
• Approaches parents can use at home to reinforce the school curricula ~~
• Resources for additional help and information

Please join the Mystic River Watershed Association (MyRWA) for their annual
fundraiser and FUN-raiser along the beautiful Mystic River.

The Mystic River Herring Run and Paddle consists of a 5K Run/Walk (USATF certified course) along the Mystic River Bike Path at 9a.m.; a 3, 9 or 12 mile Paddling Race up the Mystic River beginning at 11:00a.m. Compete in both races and be eligible for the Iron Herring Award for the male and female with the fastest overall time in the 5K-road race and the 12-mile paddle.

On Saturday, March 24th, 2012 Save the Harbor / Save the Bay will hold their 2nd Annual “Cupid Splash,” cold weather plunge and pledge fundraiser. We hope you will join us on your favorite public beach from Nahant to Nantasket as we dash and splash into the icy waters of Boston Harbor and Massachusetts Bay for a very good cause.

Last year the Cupid Splash was tons of fun, and raised more than $20,000 to support 30 free events and programs on the region's public beaches, including sand sculpture competitions, beach parties and family reading and movie nights.
This year the Cupid Splash will once again include eight simultaneous cold-water plunges on area beaches. With the addition of a "Center Stage" event at the BCYF Curley Community Center at M Street Beach in South Boston, hosted by our partners at "Harpoon Helps”, we are confident that we can reach our new fundraising goal of $30,000.

Though we understand that Valentine's Day is in February, we are holding the Cupid Splash in March again this year to avoid schedule conflicts with other swims. But don't worry, he water will be cold enough to get your blood flowing on the first weekend of spring this year - about 40 degrees. Creativity counts – so sport your finest Cupid themed attire – inflatable water wings, feather boas, arrows and other outrageous costumes!

On the morning of the Splash, Splashers will gather on their favorite public beach for hot coffee and photographs and then dash and splash into the icy ocean water at noon. There will be hot chowder and a warming Harpoon beer awaiting all Cupids when we get out of the water. Following the Splash, Save the Harbor and Harpoon Brewery will host “warm up” parties at a local pub in each community.

Online registration is free and easy. Simply visit www.cupidsplash.com to register and make a pledge. This year, you and your friends can sign up as a team and have even more fun! The website has tools that make it easy for you to register, donate, contact your friends to encourage them to give. The funds raised will support Save the Harbor / Save the Bay and free events and programs on the region's great public beaches.

There are lots of great prizes this year for the biggest fundraisers and best costumes, including round-trip tickets on JetBlue Airways to any non-stop destination. To sweeten the deal, anyone who raises or gives $100 or more will also have a chance to win JetBlue Airways tickets and some really awesome gifts from Harpoon. Of course all registered participants will receive a swag bag with great gifts and a temporary tattoo commemorating their participation.
We know that you support our work, and that you love your beach.
