Congratulations the the Winthrop High School boy’s hockey team! They won Tuesday night’s semifinal game against Saugus 6-0. This is the third shut-out in a row by our goalie Steven Waites! Monday night will be the Division 2 North championship game at the Tsongas Arena in Boston at 6:00. The winner of this game will compete at the TD Bank North Garden. Go Vikings!
Under the direction of Drama Teacher Karen Calinda, The WHS Drama Society performed "Charlie Foster" at the 2012 Massachusetts Drama Festival last Saturday in Sharon, MA. We are proud to report that Winthrop has advanced to the semi-finals. They will be performing this Saturday, March 11 2012 in Ipswich, MA. Cast members are Alanna O'Connell, Moriah Goldblatt, David Tracy, Sean Egan, Victoria Bergman, Michelle Saulnier, Jennie Maibor, Jessica Hickey, Miranda Risley, Catherine Loomis and Michael Mazzone. Break a leg!!
On Saturday, March 3, 2012, High School student Katelyn Tarrio received First Place in the Individual Exhibit category at the National History Day regional contest at Winchester High School. Ms. Tarrio is the first student from Winthrop High School to advance to the state competition. Katelyn will compete in the state contest on March 31, 2012 at Stoneham High School. Winthrop High School student Carla Aravena received an Honorable Mention for her website.
Congratulations to all students who participated: Kaycee Corea, Makenna Marie Wright, Zach Sullivan, Richard Aiello, Brian Manning, Dan Manning, and Angelica Giardina. Well done!!
The Winthrop High School Mock Trial Team will be competing this Friday, March 9th in the Woburn District Court at 1:30pm. This is the second year in a row that the team has made it to the round of 16. Good luck!
Winthrop High School participated in the “Spread the Word to End the Word” campaign this past Wednesday. The students, along with teacher Chris Connelly, worked together to share the message of acceptance and respect in support of the national campaign.
School Safety Assessment and Crisis Incident Response Plan
The Winthrop Police Department and the School Department, in conjunction with the Grants Office, applied for and were recently awarded Technical Assistance from the International Association of Chiefs of Police to conduct a district-wide School Safety Assessment as well as a review and update of our existing Crisis Incident Response Plan. The Town has been notified that a consultant from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, Steven Harris, will be working with our local school and law enforcement officials in the coming months.
Steven Harris is currently the Director of the Office of Security and Emergency Preparedness for the University of Georgia where he is responsible for homeland security and emergency management planning and initiatives. He previously served as the State School Safety Unit Manager with the Georgia Office of Homeland Security at the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA). In the past 12 years, Steve has completed over 500 site surveys of Georgia and over 50 site surveys in other states. Harris has also been involved in the development of several national public safety videos and training programs involving school vulnerability assessments, transportation security, National Incident Management System (NIMS) principles, and active shooter responses for schools.
The following is a letter from Steve Calla, Director of Public Works:
The Department of Public Works is looking forward to another productive year in our mission to upgrade our streets, sidewalks and public spaces. As budgets continue to be level funded and resources scarce, our efforts will rely heavily on creative thinking and community support. The department would like to take this opportunity to raise the awareness of three important sponsorship opportunities. We are very excited to continue another season working cooperatively with the Winthrop Chamber of Commerce to support the Chamber’s sponsor a barrel program. This program is intended to help replace aging, town owned open topped trash receptacles with visually appealing closed topped units. This will not only help beautify the town but offers significant health contributions as birds and wildlife will no longer be
able to disrupt the contents of the barrels prior to emptying. In addition, the sponsor will get their name or business attached to the barrel for a period of 5 years. A donation of $300.00 dollars (approximately 25% of the Chamber’s cost) includes the purchase, delivery, and installation of the decorative barrel at one of the Chamber’s accepted locations. Please contact Eric Gaynor at the Winthrop Chamber of Commerce for additional information and to make your donation. The Chamber is committed to the purchase of 12 receptacles for this upcoming season.
The DPW’s donate a tree program continues to be successful and adds approximately 50% annually to the department’s efforts to replenish the community with trees. The department encourages residents to consider planting trees on their property within 12 feet from the town’s sidewalk. This offers protection to the tree, helps keep roots away from utilities, and allows the town to still accept it as a town tree and assume all maintenance for it. Of course the standard sidewalk tree wells will continue to be offered as planting sites. A donation of $250.00 to the town’s established tree fund includes the location consultation, the purchase and delivery, and the installation of the tree. Please call the Department of Public Works to arrange a site visit and to discuss specific species of trees recommended
by the town.
The Department is further excited to offer our newest sponsorship program. This program offers residents the opportunity to sponsor a town bench in memory of a loved one. The department has chosen 40 locations to erect and replace new benches town-wide. These decorative, steel benches will be secured to sidewalks or dedicated cement pads and will display a stylish placard engraved with the name of your loved one. We want to thank the Proctor family for kicking off this wonderful program with their bench donation that can be viewed near the entrance to the Winthrop Public Library. The Department is asking for an $800.00 dollar donation to help cover the purchase, delivery, engraving, and installation costs. The memorial placard will remain on the bench forever.
We ask that you join in our excitement and our efforts to help beautify this wonderful town that we call Winthrop.

French Square Market Logo Contest Announcement
“Something to do, something to buy, something to eat, something to listen to…” French Square Market is coming to the Town Center this summer! This pilot program is planned to include a variety of vendors drawn from local businesses, civic organizations, artisans, and artists. From June 7th to August 30th, this initiative will transform the Center Business District on Thursday evenings from 4 to 8PM. The market will be set up along the sidewalk and roadway between Hagman Road and Woodside Avenue as well as the park that is directly adjacent. There will be music, family activities, and café style seating for al fresco dining. More details to follow soon!

Three people from last year and ten new people have signed up for the Community Garden. We are going to have young and old alike planting and cultivating what they sow. All sound enthusiastic and are looking forward to a bountiful growing season. There are only three 4 ft by 4 ft plots left which are being given on a first come, first serve basis. Last year, the raised beds were constructed and the soil was prepared. If you are interested in registering for a plot of your own, please contact Nancy Williams at 617-846-8538 for more information.
Parks and Recreation is currently all applications for the Spring 2012 Season. They are asking that everyone please return their applications as soon as possible so that we can get a final count for the teams and schedules.
You can sign up via the parks and recreation website and/or drop the applications to the parks and recreation office with a $100 deposit. The remaining balance would be collected at the start of the program.
Registration will now close on Monday, March 12th.

On Saturday, March 10th, National Grid workers will be removing equipment from their substation, located on Argyle Street. They will be accessing the substation property via the gate, directly across from the rear parking lot at Dunkin Donuts. While the work crews are positioning a tractor-trailer and crane at the substation, vehicle traffic on Argyle Street will be temporarily blocked for approximately two hours, beginning at 6:30am. There will be a Winthrop Police officer on site to assist with traffic issues.
National Grid has made arrangements with Mr. Amaral of Amaral & Associates, P.C. for residential customers to park in front of his law office, located at 246 Revere Street, across from Dunkin Donuts. If you would like to avoid being temporarily blocked in on Saturday morning, please park your car at Mr. Amaral’s property on Friday evening.
