7th Grade Middle School student Amelia Fantasia was the first place winner in the school level competition of the National Geographic Bee. Amelia took a written test and up to 100 of the top scorers in each state will be eligible to compete in the State Bee on March 30, 2012. Good luck Amelia!
8th Grade Middle School student Jake LaFratta has been elected to the Ambassador for the Town of Winthrop for Project 351. Project 351 celebrates the ethic of service, youth leadership, and the power of community to uplift and unite. The heart of Project 351 is the dedication and compassion of young leaders from across the Commonwealth. Congratulations Jake!

8th Grade Middle School student Derek Murdoch was nominated and chosen to speak on Thursday, March 22nd at the Afterschool Works Advocacy Day. The event is being held at the State House beginning at 9:30am in the Great Hall of Flags. Derek has been attending the 21st Century Afterschool Program for six years. Derek will be part of an impressive speaking lineup including Secretary of Education Paul Reville, Chairwoman of the House Joint Committee on Education, Representative Alice Peisch, Executive Director of the Massachusetts Culture Council, Anita Walker, and Senator Thomas McGee.
Congratulations to the following High School students who received February Student of the Month: Alex Anzuoni, Shawn Preble, Alexandra August, Katelyn Tarrio, Alyssa Mackey, Kristin Bartone, Michael Lynch, Justin Casilla, Kayla Russo, Angelica Giardino, Andrew Ascolillo, and Michael Lessard. Winthrop’s got Talent!
Winthrop High School is having a talent show Friday, March 23rd at 7:00 at Winthrop High School.
The Senior Citizen Volunteer Tax Reduction Program allows seniors (over the age of 60), to volunteer their services in exchange for a reduction in their property tax bill. Participants may earn a maximum reduction of $500.00 per fiscal year based on a rate per hour of service that cannot exceed the Commonwealth's minimum wage.
Senior Volunteer Tax Program Requirements are:
You must be a taxpayer and 60 years of age or older during the tax year when the volunteering is completed and the tax reduction is credited.
To be credited, the volunteer must have an ownership interest and reside in the property year round.
Total reduction will not exceed $500.00.
Hours must be completed by October 15th of the credited year.
A CORI Release Form must accompany the application.
Volunteers will be selected by lottery.
The Council on Aging Director will notify lottery winners of the drawing results and all other pertinent information shortly after the lottery.
Creditable volunteerism can start immediately following participant notification in conjunction with authorization by the Council on Aging Director.
If any selected volunteer is not able to fully participate, the Town may select another volunteer to participate up to the amount of hours not completed by the original applicant.
If you are interested in this program, you can pick up an application packet at the Senior Center. All applications should be returned to the Senior Center 35 Harvard St. Applications will be accepted until the close of business on Wednesday - April 20, 2012.

The Community Garden is ready to go! All participants will be meeting at the Senior Center on Saturday, March 31, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. The soil is going to be turned in the beds, cow manure added and then planting will soon follow. This meeting will be a great opportunity for everyone participating to introduce themselves. Also, the garden is fully enclosed by a fence and all participants will receive their own key to have access to the garden.
French Square Market Logo Contest Announcement
“Something to do, something to buy, something to eat, something to listen to…” French Square Market is coming to the Town Center this summer! This pilot program is planned to include a variety of vendors drawn from local businesses, civic organizations, artisans, and artists. From June 7th to August 30th, this initiative will transform the Center Business District on Thursday evenings from 4 to 8PM. The market will be set up along the sidewalk and roadway between Hagman Road and Woodside Avenue as well as the park that is directly adjacent. There will be music, family activities, and café style seating for al fresco dining. More details to follow soon!

The Cupid Splash on Winthrop Beach will be at high noon Saturday, March 24th. Come to Shore Drive near Dophin Ave and take the plunge! Bring friends. Help ‘Save the Harbor’ support events on Winthrop Beach this summer. After the Splash, Harpoon Brewery will sponsor the Splashers at a local pub. On April 19th, a National Disability Advocate, Jon Rodis, will give a presentation on How to apply for Social Security Disability. This will take place at 7:00 PM at the Senior Center, which is located at
35 Harvard Street in Winthrop.
He will also be available for questions.
This is a free service.
The annual Parks and Recreation Character Breakfast and Easter egg hunt with the Easter Bunny will be held on Saturday, March 31st from 8:30-11:30am at the Fort Banks School. Presale tickets are $8, and at the door will be $10.00. For more information, or to buy tickets, call 617-846-8243.
Parks and Recreation is offering a Coupon Training Class! This is a one-night seminar. Learn to stretch your dollars! Come meet the Winthrop mom, Bettie, the “Queen of coupons”, who has perfected the art of using coupons to reduce her family food bill. Attendees will come away with the tools to save at least the cost of the course off their first grocery trip after applying the lessons learned at the class. The class will be held Thursday, March 29th from 7:00-8:00pm at the E.B. Newton Cultural Center. The cost is $20. The following is a letter from Steve Calla, Director of Public Works:
The Department of Public Works is looking forward to another productive year in our mission to upgrade our streets, sidewalks and public spaces. As budgets continue to be level funded and resources scarce, our efforts will rely heavily on creative thinking and community support. The department would like to take this opportunity to raise the awareness of three important sponsorship opportunities. We are very excited to continue another season working cooperatively with the Winthrop Chamber of Commerce to support the Chamber’s sponsor a barrel program. This program is intended to help replace aging, town owned open topped trash receptacles with visually appealing closed topped units. This will not only help beautify the town but offers significant health contributions as birds and wildlife will no longer be
able to disrupt the contents of the barrels prior to emptying. In addition, the sponsor will get their name or business attached to the barrel for a period of 5 years. A donation of $300.00 dollars (approximately 25% of the Chamber’s cost) includes the purchase, delivery, and installation of the decorative barrel at one of the Chamber’s accepted locations. Please contact Eric Gaynor at the Winthrop Chamber of Commerce for additional information and to make your donation. The Chamber is committed to the purchase of 12 receptacles for this upcoming season.
The DPW’s donate a tree program continues to be successful and adds approximately 50% annually to the department’s efforts to replenish the community with trees. The department encourages residents to consider planting trees on their property within 12 feet from the town’s sidewalk. This offers protection to the tree, helps keep roots away from utilities, and allows the town to still accept it as a town tree and assume all maintenance for it. Of course the standard sidewalk tree wells will continue to be offered as planting sites. A donation of $250.00 to the town’s established tree fund includes the location consultation, the purchase and delivery, and the installation of the tree. Please call the Department of Public Works to arrange a site visit and to discuss specific species of trees recommended
by the town.
The Department is further excited to offer our newest sponsorship program. This program offers residents the opportunity to sponsor a town bench in memory of a loved one. The department has chosen 40 locations to erect and replace new benches town-wide. These decorative, steel benches will be secured to sidewalks or dedicated cement pads and will display a stylish placard engraved with the name of your loved one. We want to thank the Proctor family for kicking off this wonderful program with their bench donation that can be viewed near the entrance to the Winthrop Public Library. The Department is asking for an $800.00 dollar donation to help cover the purchase, delivery, engraving, and installation costs. The memorial placard will remain on the bench forever.
We ask that you join in our excitement and our efforts to help beautify this wonderful town that we call Winthrop.

Friends of the 21st Century Learning Center are having a Mom & Me Play date Group for children ages 1-4. The children will have playtime with other toddlers and play games. They will also participate in age appropriate crafts.
The playgroup will take place Wednesday mornings at Kathy’s Place Youth Center from 10:00- 11:00am. This is a six-week course. The cost is $60.00. For more information, call 857-816-3400.

The Winthrop Seaside Striders 5k Foot Race will be held on Friday, June 8th at 6:30pm.
The course starts and ends at Winthrop High School.
The Winthrop Seaside Striders have a mission… to promote health and fitness in Winthrop’s youth through running and other endurance sports. The Point Shirley Athletic Association and Seaside Striders sponsor the race. This 5k (3.1 mile) road race is a USA Track & Field Certified Course. The entry fee is $25.00 and all proceeds will be donated to Winthrop Parks and Recreation. Make checks payable to Point Shirley Athletic Club.
