High School student Katelyn Tarrio recently competed at the Massachusetts State National History Day contest at Stoneham High School and came in 2nd Place in the individual exhibit category.  Ms. Tarrio will go on to compete at the National competition at the University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland!  Nice job Katelyn!

20 students at the Arthur T. Cummings School participated in an enrichment program with Abacus (Soraban).  Under the guidance of Sam Chen, the program uses International Abacus Standard, with various levels.  Students have been showing their commitment and hard work in this early morning program.  The most recent Abacus exam took place on March 23rd and the following students achieved these levels:  Level 7 – Matthew Rudser, Luke Evangelista, Holly Doig, and Emily Donovan; Level 8 – Grace Smotrich, Fatma Tufa, James Ezekiel, Noah Evangelista, Tony Nargi, Olivia Bradi-Miller, and Joseph Mahoney.  A ceremony will take place on April 6, 2012 at the Arthur T. Cummings School.  Congratulations!

7th grade teacher Shene Randall is participating in Project Bread’s Walk for Hunger on Sunday, May 6th with several 7th grade students.  Ms. Randall and the students have raised over $1000.00 as a team so far!

Winthrop High School Class of 2015 (the Freshman Class) is having a bake sale this Saturday, April 7th, 9:00am-1:00pm in French Square!
Come support this great class!

Kindergarten Registration will take place April 9th-12th at Town Hall in the Joseph Harvey Hearing Room.  Please note this new location – this is a change from previous years.  Your child must be five years old by September 1, 2012 in order to attend.  Please contact Judi Buono at 617-846-5500 x102 for more information and to make an appointment.

Please mark your calendars for the Peaceful Solutions Annual Family Night on Tuesday, April 10th, 6:00pm-8:00pm, at the Arthur T. Cummings Elementary School.  The theme this year is “Born This Way” – respecting ourselves and others.  Pizza, salad and dessert will be served.  A magician will be performing at 6:30pm.  Prizes will be awarded for the poster and poetry contests submitted by our K-6 students.  This is a free event and all are welcome to attend!

Parks and Recreation is offering a one night cooking class
A Taste of New England
Presented by Ryan Cyr- Chef/owner of Bistro-at-Home
April 12th from 6:00pm- 9:00pm
At the Winthrop Senior Center, 35 Harvard Street
The cost is $90.00

This class will encourage participants to explore regional New England cooking traditions with a focus on local products. Topics will include a history of New England style cuisine, an overview of locally grown products, plus new trends for old classics. Class will be hands-on with all members participating in making a portion of the meal, served buffet style at the end of the class. Food preparation and technical instruction will cover making stock for Turnip Bisque, preparation of Yankee Pot Roast and Winter Root Vegetables, and creating Local Apple & Cranberry Crisp for dessert.

Parks and Recreation is offering a Heartsaver Course.
All classes have a class size limit of 6.
This Heartsaver Course teaches the basic skills of Adult, Child, and Infant CPR and how to use an AED (Automated External Defibrillator).
Students also learn about using barrier devices in CPR and giving first aid for choking.  The course teaches how to recognize the signs of four major emergencies: heart attack, stroke, cardiac arrest, and foreignbody obstruction.
This is a 3.5-hour class.

The Winthrop Playmakers announce auditions for The Music Man

It’s time to start putting a beat to the music!

Thursday, April 12 7:00pm-9:30, & Thursday, April 19 from 6:30-9pm
Callbacks will be on Saturday, April 21 from 2-5pm

Please prepare 16 bars of two contrasting songs (and bring the sheet music) and be ready to learn a dance combination.

Rehearsals will be Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays beginning May 14th.
Performances are August 2-12.

There is a Kathy’s Place Youth Center ‘Spring Fling’ dance on Friday, April 6th for children in Kindergarten through 5th grade from 6:30 to 8:30 PM.  The cost is $10.00 and proceeds will to the 21st Century Summer Program.

Application deadlines for the fiscal year are as follows:

Applications will be accepted until the close of business on April 18, 2012 (see pg. 2 of 5).

Work will begin May/June, through the summer, September with the final date being October 15, 2012 (pg. 2 of 5).

The Senior Citizen Volunteer Service/Tax Liability Reduction Program allows seniors (over the age of 60), to volunteer their services in exchange for a reduction in their property tax bill. ~Participants may earn a maximum reduction of $500.00 per fiscal year based on a rate per hour of service that cannot exceed the Commonwealth’s minimum wage.

Senior Volunteer Tax Program Requirements program requirements are:

You must be a taxpayer and 60 years of age or older during the tax year when the volunteering is completed and the tax reduction is credited.
To be credited, the volunteer must have an ownership interest and reside in the property year round.
Total reduction will not exceed $500.00.
Hours must be completed by October 15th of the credited year.
A CORI Release Form must accompany the application.

Other information:
Volunteers will be selected by lottery.
The Council on Aging Director will notify lottery winners of the drawing results and all other pertinent information shortly after the lottery.
Creditable volunteerism can start immediately following participant notification in conjunction with authorization by the Council on Aging Director.
If any selected volunteer is not able to fully participate, the Town may select another volunteer to participate up to the amount of hours not completed by the original participant.

On April 19th, a National Disability Advocate, Jon Rodis, will give a presentation on How to apply for Social Security Disability.  This will take place at 7:00 PM at the Senior Center, which is located at
35 Harvard Street in Winthrop.

The monthly informal networking event will be held Friday, April 6th from 7:00pm to 9:00pm at the E.B. Newton Cultural Center on the 1st floor.  This event is free and open to everyone, so bring a friend or two, your other half or a co-worker.  You don’t have to be from Winthrop.  Please no children.  If you have business cards or marketing materials, please bring those.  Light refreshments will be served.

The Winthrop Seaside Striders 5k Foot Race will be held on Friday, June 8th at 6:30pm.  The course starts and ends at Winthrop High School.  
The Winthrop Seaside Striders have a mission… to promote health and fitness in Winthrop’s youth through running and other endurance sports.  The Point Shirley Athletic Association and Seaside Striders sponsor the race.  This 5k (3.1 mile) road race is a USA Track & Field Certified Course.  The entry fee is $25.00 and all proceeds will be donated to Winthrop Parks and Recreation.  Make checks payable to Point Shirley Athletic Club.
