FRENCH SQUARE OPEN-AIR MARKET
TO BEGIN TOMORROW- THURSDAY JUNE 7
Music, Crafts, Food Kick-Off Summer-Long Festivities
On Thursday June 7th from 4 to 8PM, Winthrop Center will host the first of 13 weekly Open Air markets. The French Square Market Planning Committee is delighted to announce a terrific roster of vendors and events for the first market.
Both the Winthrop Marketplace and Tutti Fruitti will be selling fresh produce and organic fruits and vegetables. Something Sweet Without Wheat will be providing gluten-free treats as well. Adjacent businesses are also getting involved, with Hong Kong Dragon and La Siesta offering specials for market-goers and Swett’s Liquors hosting a series of beer tastings. Other food vendors are still being added to the roster for the kick-off event.
Musical entertainment will be provided by Ellen O’Brien, fresh off of her successful Kickstarter campaign. For those looking to support our local artisans, Merrill Frank Pottery, Denise Larity Photography, McNally Design, Jangles Jewelry, and Studio Dawn are just a sampling of the arts and craft vendors that will be surrounding the Square.
The Parks and Recreation Department will be on hand to do face-painting and to answer any last minute questions about this summer’s program offerings. At each Thursday’s Market, there will also be informational tables providing news about a wide variety of community events and topics. Look for the Friends of Music Matters and the Winthrop Parents Network on June 7th.
The area around French Square will be transformed into a pedestrian mall, with large bistro tables covered by colorful sunshade umbrellas providing space to sit and eat. ~The road between Samuel’s Pharmacy and the park will be blocked off for the duration of the event, with traffic around the Center being re-routed via Jefferson Street to Putnam Street from 3 to 9PM to accommodate the vendor tables and dining area.
According to the Town’s Grants Administrator, Peter Lombardi, this weekly event has been long in the making and represents a genuine partnership between the Winthrop Chamber of Commerce, the Town’s Cultural Council, the Winthrop Art Association, Parks and Recreation, and the Department of Public Works.
Everyone is invited down to the Center for this family-friendly event, to be held each Thursday throughout June, July, and August. Help make French Square Market a community success!
