French Square Open-Air Market

Music, Crafts, Food Kick-Off Summer-Long Festivities
Tonight from 4 to 8PM, Winthrop Center will host its weekly Open Air market. Everyone is invited down to the Center for this family-friendly event, to be held each Thursday throughout June, July, and August. Help make French Square Market a community success!

The John Penny Band will perform as well as Jessica Santacroce-Silva.
The John Penny Band is a popular six piece country band and vocals offering contemporary and traditional country music, 50’s and 60’s, plus pop standards.
Jessica is a talented local artist who performs popular music.
Come down and check them out!

Pico Park Revitalization
The Town was notified this week that we have been awarded $5,000 in grant funding from Massport through its Charitable Giving Program to assist in the planned renovations to Pico Park. This funding will be added to the $25,000.00 that the Town Council approved in the FY13 Capital Budget for this project. A community build similar to what has been organized this past year at the Gorman Fort Banks School and Daw Playground is planned in the months ahead at Pico.

Take the Winthrop Ferry to Spectacle Island this weekend!

This Sunday, June 15th, enjoy a yoga retreat, plus~great music
at Spectacle Island:

Featuring guitarist David Ehle. Relax on the Spectacle Island porch to the sounds of big bands, folk music, swing, and jazz ensembles.
Music begins at 12 NOON.

The Winthrop Ferry leaves the Town Landing for Spectacle Island at 10am, 1pm, and 3pm every Saturday and Sunday. It returns to Winthrop from Spectacle Island at 10:30am, 1:30pm, and 3:30pm –

On July 25th, members of the Winthrop Police and Fire Departments will be hosting a summer barbecue at the Senior Center. They will be providing meats for the grill, and cooking the food. The Senior Center Social Committee will be providing salads, beverages and dessert. The charge for this barbecue is only $2.00, which will go toward the dessert and door prizes.
There are still some tickets left.

Many thanks to the Police and Fire Department personnel for taking the time to host this barbecue for our senior citizens. They take care of us every day, and do a wonderful job making sure we are "safe and sound". Now, they are making sure we have a good time and eat well!

Legislative Luncheon July 16
Speaker of the House Bob DeLeo and Senator Anthony Petruccelli will be speaking at the annual Legislative Luncheon put on by the Winthrop Elks, Rotary, and Chamber of Commerce.~ All are invited to meet with their state legislators for an update from Beacon Hill.~ The luncheon will be at the Winthrop Lodge of Elks, 191 Washington Ave. at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, July 16.~ It is $20 per person: call 617-846-9898, RSVP by July 12.

Fun & games in store at the Chamber’s “Family Day at the Beach” on July 21
Beautiful Yirrell Beach on Point Shirley will be the place to be for fun in the sun Saturday, July 21, for the 15th annual “Old Fashioned Family Day at the Beach.”~ In the event of rain, the event will be held Sunday, July 22.
There will be lots to do for both kids and adults, with activities running from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm.~ Kids will enjoy taking a dip in the wave-runner and on the water-slide. Spinning the tunes throughout the day will be DJ Jeff Lyons with some awesome beach music.~ There will also be giveaways, games, raffles, a barbecue and much more.
Contests will take place all day.~ They are free to enter and always entertaining.~ The schedule for the day is as follows: 11:00 a.m. - Scavenger Hunt; 11:30 a.m. - Simon Says; 12:00 p.m. - Water Balloon Toss; 12:30 p.m. - Look-Alike Contest; 12:45 p.m. - Animal Imitation Contest; 1:00 p.m. - Adult Spelling Bee; 1:30 p.m. - Winthrop’s Got Talent; 2:00 p.m. - Hat Contest; 2:30 p.m. - Dance Contest; 3:00 p.m. - Hula Hoop Contest.

This will be the 15th year the Winthrop Chamber of Commerce has sponsored this summertime event, and it keeps on getting bigger and better.~ There will be lots to do and enjoy, so be sure to bring a camera.~ Special thanks to For Kids Only After school program, Parks & Recreation, and the Winthrop Fire and Public Works departments for their assistance and to the Winthrop Marketplace for their great support.~ For more information call 617-846-9898.

Looking for a fun way to spend a summer evening?

Every Friday night, The Revolution departs from the Winthrop public landing and goes out for a sunset cruise around Boston Harbor from 7:00-10:00pm.   There is a cash bar and snacks available on board. The cost is $25 per person and tickets can be purchased at  

The Revolution, with Capt. Tim Gover at the wheel, cruises Boston Harbor and the Harbor Islands from May 1st through November 1st.~

Kathy’s Place Youth Center will be open on Wednesday and Friday nights from 6 to 8 PM for preK to 5th grade and from 8:30 to 10:30 PM for 6th to 8th graders. $10.00 for non-members and $8.00 for members. All proceeds will benefit the Youth Center Summer Camp Program.

The Winthrop Police have issued a traffic alert for the Belle Isle Bridge.  

Beginning Friday, June 29th at 1:00am or shortly thereafter, MIG (the company working on the Belle Isle Bridge) will be swapping the usable side of the Belle Isle Bridge from the Southern side to the Northern (Dunkin Donut) side.

Speed limit will be reduced to 25MPH for 24 hours a day due to the construction.  Please have patience and expect delays until the motoring public is used to the traffic flow changes due to this construction.
