$20 entry fee
From 9:00am- 1:00pm there will be live music and face painting!
Money raised from this event goes to education and assistance for families and individuals struggling with drug and alcohol addiction in our community. Friends Helping Friends also supports youth groups and community based organizations that serve families in need.
Winthrop Parks and Recreation’s After School Program begins on Monday, September 10th. They offer complimentary pick-up at the Gorman Fort Banks and the Cummings School to their location in the rear of the Middle School. They offer extended hours on vacation and half days, homework help, snacks, outdoor activities, crafts, Wii, sports and much more! Visit them at the rear of the Middle School (151 Pauline Street) for a registration form or download one from their website at www.winthroprec.com
The hours are after school until 6:00pm and they offer care for grades K-7. Call 617-846-8243 for more information.
September 8th and 9th is food pantry weekend. The Winthrop Food Pantry serves those in need in our community. They rely on our help. Any non-perishable food or monetary donations are gratefully accepted.

On Saturday, September 8th from 10:00 to 2:00pm, there will be a Resource-Volunteer fair at Ingleside Park in Winthrop. The resource categories will be SENIORS, LOSING A LOVED ONE, CHILDREN, LOW INCOME and HOMELESS ISSUES. The organizations will be from the North Shore and Boston area. And if you are looking for volunteer opportunities, this is the place. Many organizations that will be participating are looking for volunteers. Also at the fair will be live entertainment, family and children activities and food. This is a FREE event for everyone. For more information, please contact Judie at 617-462-5719.
The monthly informal networking event will be held Friday, September 7th from 7:00pm to 9:00pm at the E.B. Newton Cultural Center on the 1st floor. ~This event is free and open to everyone, so bring a friend or two, your other half or a co-worker. ~You don’t have to be from Winthrop. ~Please no children. ~If you have business cards or marketing materials, please bring those. ~Light refreshments will be served.
Taste of Winthrop
Prepare your taste buds for an incredible selection of food from around the world at the 7th annual “Taste of Winthrop”. Savor an array of cuisines, including Italian, American, Greek, Chinese, Moroccan, Spanish, Mexican, Mediterranean, Colombian, seafood, and more. Over 30 of the finest eating establishments will be participating in this year’s event, which is happening on September 19th at the Winthrop Yacht Club.
Call the Chamber of Commerce at 617-846-9898 for tickets or visit Winthrop MarketPlace, Woodside Hardware or the senior center to get your tickets. All proceeds will go to the beautification of Winthrop! There will be delicious food, specialty cocktails and live entertainment.

On September 29th 2012, celebrate Neil Shapiro’s life and raise money for the Viking Pride Foundation benefiting Winthrop High's Arts and Media Departments.

The 2011 Neil Shapiro Memorial 5K Walk/Run and Party events were a great success!~Together we raised over $14,000, which funded new sound and lighting equipment for Winthrop High School's Dramatic Arts Department!

The North Shore Rovers Special Olympics Youth Soccer team gets ready to kick off the second season!!!
This fun and free of cost youth soccer program is open to all Special Olympics Athletes ages 3-15! In addition to the Rovers program for ages 8-15, we are excited to add the new Junior Rovers program, for Special Athlete Sports Stars aged 3-7 for a non-competitive introduction to soccer and playing as a member of a team. NO SOCCER EXPERIENCE NEEDED!! Some of our best players last year had never touched a soccer ball before they began to play with us and others were seasoned goal makers when they arrived at the field for the first time.
Both programs will have Sunday morning practices, 9-10:00 from September 9 through the end of October. There are two tournaments for the older group, one mid-season and one which caps off what promises to be another awesome season!! All coaches and volunteers are CORI checked, receive Special Olympics training and are overseen by the well trained head coaches. Each player will “buddy” up with a partner, typically a High School soccer player who will be there every week so your child knows what, and who, to expect at each practice. Jack Steele, head coach, has played soccer since he could kick the ball, has coached for many years and is current President of Swampscott Youth Soccer Association.
Our team last year included players with a wide range of capabilities and every single one played, high fived, laughed, became a true team player, cheered on their friends, and improved their soccer skills. The 2012 Greater Boston Walk to End Alzheimer’s is on Sunday, September 23rd at Canal Park in Cambridge.
The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer care, support and research. Help our grandparents, parents, spouses, partners, brothers, sisters and friends living with the disease, and unite in a movement to reclaim the future for millions.
Each participant that raises $150 by walk day receives a free T-shirt!
