VOTERS MAY VOTE ABSENTEE OVER THE COUNTER BEGINNING WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 3, 2012

LAST DAY TO REGISTER TO VOTE TO BE ELIGIBLE TO VOTE IN THIS ELECTION IS OCTOBER 17, 2012 AT 8PM. THE TOWN CLERK’S OFFICE WILL BE OPEN FROM 8AM TO 8PM

Voters who are unable to vote on election-day because of physical disability, religious beliefs or travel may vote by absentee ballot. If you will be absent from Winthrop for an extended period of time, you may submit a single application for all elections occurring within the year the application is filed.

Applications for absentee ballots may be obtained from the Town Clerk or downloaded from the Town Clerk’s Web Page at www.town.winthrop.ma.us then click Departments and Town Clerk. Applications may be submitted in person or by mail. The voter, or a "family member" (father, mother, sister, brother, son, daughter, grandparent, grandchild, a spouse or person residing in the same household, in-laws, adopting parent or adopted child, stepparent or stepchild, aunt, uncle, niece or nephew), may submit an application. All absentee ballot applications must be signed by the voter or a family member under the penalty of perjury before an absentee ballot will be made available.

Applications for absentee ballots must be received by the Town Clerk before 12:00 noon the day before an election. (A voter who is admitted to a health care facility after noon of the fifth day before an election may apply for a ballot up until the close of the polls and may request to have the ballot delivered.) Absentee ballots generally are available three weeks before an election.

The Winthrop School Committee presented 3rd grade student Mia Martucci with a certificate of achievement for raising money for Children’s Hospital.  Mia held a lemonade stand and raised over $700.00.  She purchased 15 hope dolls for children with cancer, and presented a check in the amount of $398.00 to Children’s Hospital.  “Mia’s Lemonade Stand” has a website if you would to make a contribution.  www.howtohelp.childrenshospital.org/events/page/Tracey-Martucci/miaslemonadestand.

The 11 Foundation’s 2nd Annual Tailgating Event will be held on Friday, October 19th at the Winthrop Golf Club.  Tickets are $50.00 and can be purchased at www.mase11foundation.eventbrite.com.  The 11 Foundation was formed in memory of Michael J. Mason.  The event will include food, raffles, silent auctions, door prizes, music and a cash bar.

On Thursday, October 4, 2012, Speaker of the House Robert DeLeo will be at Winthrop High School to address our junior and senior class about voting.  This will coincide with a voter registration for our eligible students at Winthrop High School.

Over 20 middle school students signed up for a new Community Service Club offered at the Middle School.  Kristen Fainga’a has volunteered to advise the club.  Mrs. Fainga’a is a former member of the Peace Corps and works as an educator at Shriner’s Hosptial.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer

Parks and Recreation’s Annual Fall Fair will be held on Saturday, October 6th from 11:00am- 3:00pm at Ingleside Park.  (Rain date is Sunday, October 7th)  There will be a pumpkin patch, pumpkin painting, train rides, amusements, pony rides, moon bounce, games, food and entertainment.  Craft table spaces are available.  (Tables are not supplied.)  For more details, email parksandrecreation@town.winthrop.ma.us

Wednesday, October 17, 2012 will be the last day to register to vote for the upcoming Presidential Election on Tuesday, November 6, 2012. The Town Clerk’s Office will be open on October 17th, from 8am to 8pm for citizen convenience.

The only requirements to register to vote are that you are a citizen of the United States, a resident of Winthrop and will be 18 years old on or before Election Day. You may register in the Town Clerk’s Office, or you may request a mail-in registration form by phone or log onto http://www.sec.state.ma.us/ele/elestu/stuidx.htm. Those registering to vote using mail-in registration forms must have their forms postmarked no later than October 17th, 2012 in order to vote in the Election.

Precincts 3, 4 & 6 have had voting location and precinct changes in the last year. Please read the following to be sure you have the correct information or call the office at 617-846-1742

Pursuant to Massachusetts General Law chapter 54, section 6, the Town of Winthrop has changed voting precincts to reflect population changes as calculated by the most recent federal census.  These changes are reflective of the new maps drawn by the State.  The following is a listing of streets that have been changed

WINARC CELEBRATES FIFTY YEARS OF SERVICES

The Board of WINARC is proud to announce its 50+ Celebration which will take place on Saturday, October 13th, 2012.  Join in the FUN at the VFW Mottolo Post, Temple Street in Revere.  Doors open at 6:00PM; dinner at 7:00PM.

WINARC has become a major force in improving the quality of life of children and adults with disabilities. Many community members have fond memories of their involvement with WINARC, and now is a chance to join the celebration.

You can buy tickets to attend the event ($30 per person), by contacting Jim Murphy at 617-846-7964.  Or by purchasing them at Five Petals Florist, Simon’s Book Store or Michael’s Hallmark.  Tickets will not be sold at the door.

Boy Scout Pack 75 will be holding a food drive on November 2 “under the lights” at Miller Field during the Viking vs. Triton football game.  In an effort to give back to the Community, this food drive will benefit the Citizens of Winthrop in need and will assist the food pantry just before Thanksgiving, a time of need for many Winthrop families.

Parks and Recreation is planning a Foxwoods Casino trip on Sunday, October 7th.  The cost is $25 and includes a $10 food coupon and $10 of free play.  Enjoy this exciting day trip- gaming, casual and fine dining, and retail shopping.  Call 617-846-8243 for tickets.  The bus leaves from the Cummings school half circle at 8:00am and returns at approximately 8:00pm.

CAPIC’s Fuel Assistance Program Opens its 2012-2013 Season
CAPIC’s Fuel Assistance Program is taking applications for the 2012-2013 Season.  Residents of the communities of Chelsea, Revere and Winthrop may apply for help with their home heating from November 2012 thru April 2013.  Eligibility is based on household size and income and tenants and homeowners can apply.  Households may heat with a deliverable fuel as well as with gas or electric.  Assistance is also available for households whose heat is included in their rent.  For additional information, please call 617-884-6130 x125.

The Winthrop Playmakers are set to open their 2012-2013 Season with William Shakespeare’s beloved comedy As You Like It, directed by Parker Reed & Steavie Hergenrader.

Shakespeare's comedy about kissing courtiers and country copulatives transports us all into the inspiring Forest of Arden. We follow a motley mix of wondering wanderers to find "tongues in trees" and "books in the running brooks," and through great debates concerning realism vs. romanticism, mirth vs. melancholy, and grasping gadgets vs. nurturing Nature, we are invited to weave a way toward happiness.

This production comments on modern day corporate America and is sure to intrigue and delight audiences of all ages!

CAPIC’s Satellite Site in Winthrop

Winthrop residents have the opportunity to access all CAPIC services at the Winthrop Senior Center, 35 Harvard Street. CAPIC has representatives from each program on-site throughout the week (each program has a specific time) to meet with clients. Programs include: Head Start, Workforce Development, Child Development Center, After School & Summer Camp, Emergency Services, Crisis Intervention (including domestic violence), and Weatherization. In addition, starting on October 24th, people will have the opportunity to apply for CAPIC’s Fuel Assistance Program. Anyone interested in applying for fuel assistance should contact CAPIC’s main office at 617-884-6130 to find out what documentation is required to apply. The schedule is as follows:
