Please remember to prepare for the Presidential Election to be held on November 6th! The polls will open at 7am and remain open until 8pm. To prepare, read the Red Book that was mailed by the Commonwealth to households in late September or visit http://www.sec.state.ma.us/ele/eleidx.htm for more information. Unfortunately at this time, additional copies of the Red Book have still not been mailed from the State to the Town Clerk’s Office or the Library so online may be the only way to get this information.
Specimen Ballots will be posted next week at 18 locations in Town and also have been posted at Town Hall, please call the Town Clerk’s Office for exact locations. The voting locations are as follows:
Precincts 1, 2 & 5 will vote at the Middle School Gym
Precincts 3 & 6 at the Senior Center on Harvard Street
Precinct 4 at O’Connell Hall on Golden Drive
Please be sure when you arrive at the polling location you get in the correct line for your precinct. Students from Winthrop High School will be at each location to guide and assist the voters. Please remember to bring identification that shows you live at your voting address. Lastly, drive with caution in and around the polling locations, look carefully for children!

The William P. Gorman Fort Banks School is having their first Annual Coat Swap. It will take place between October 22, 2012 – October 31, 2012. If your child has a coat to spare, simply send in the clean, used coats to school in a bag marked “coat swap”, or stop by and deposit your coats in the coat bin outside the school during pick-up and drop-off. Does your child need a coat? Stop by the school between Noon and 2:00pm on November 1st and look for a coat that is right for your child. No coat donation is necessary to participate. Any leftover coats after November 1st will be donated to a local charity.
The Winthrop High School Girls’ Soccer Team has qualified for the state tournament. Go Lady Vikings!
Congratulations to 5th grade student Ella McCarey for passing the Level 8 Abacus exam. Great job!
There will be a casino presentation by Suffolk Downs on November 15th at 7:00pm at the Robert DeLeo Senior Center.
Fuel Assistance Program
CAPIC’s Fuel Assistance Program is taking applications for the 2012-2013 Season. Residents of the communities of Chelsea, Revere and Winthrop may apply for help with their home heating from November 2012 thru April 2013. Eligibility is based on household size and income and tenants and homeowners can apply. Households may heat with a deliverable fuel as well as with gas or electric. Assistance is also available for households whose heat is included in their rent.
Also, CAPIC is pleased to announce that it is extending its regular hours (Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.) to include weekend hours. Beginning on November 3rd, the Fuel Assistance Program will be open Saturdays from 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. It is important to note that no appointment is necessary during these hours. Interested individuals residing in Chelsea, Revere, and Winthrop are encouraged to apply. CAPIC’s Fuel Assistance Program is located at 100 Everett Avenue, Unit 14, Chelsea, MA. If you have questions regarding eligibility for the Program, please call 617-884-6130.
The School Building Assistance Committee is sponsoring an open forum on Wednesday, November 14th at 6:30pm at Winthrop High School. There will be a presentation that will include all of our available options and their costs. This is a very important issue and will be decided upon by the voters next fall for the benefit of our kids, schools and the Town. There will be a discussion as well as a question and answer period.

Winthrop family members in United States Military?
Do you have a Winthrop family member in United States Military? Whether they're stationed in Fort Dix NJ, Pensacola Florida, Afghanistan, Japan, Germany, San Diego CA or aboard a NAVY ship in the Pacific, Richard Honan and Winthrop's American Legion Post 146 wants to make sure they receive a Christmas gift or Holiday present from Winthrop. The Holidays are approaching; let's make sure all of our Winthrop residents in the military receive a nice thank you for their military service.
If you have a family member from Winthrop in the US Military, please forward me there their name and military address. If they are married with a family, please forward their home address and maybe we can help with presents for the children. The 13th annual "Halloween Haunt" will take place in Winthrop Center on Wednesday, October 31st. It will start at 4:00 pm from Winthrop Federal Credit Union for kids in costume 10 and under accompanied by a parent/guardian. Please bring a non-perishable food item for the Winthrop Community Food Pantry. Trick-or-treat while helping others eat!
Beacon Photography Gallery Event
Beacon Photography is having a free gallery event this Friday, featuring two visual artists (illustrator and photographer), live jazz and blues music, and a guest lecturer. Tom Curry (radio DJ and jazz-blues expert), will share the story of Jazz and Blues in the context of American history; a multi-media presentation not to miss. In addition, they will have a sampling of delicious desserts by Tutti Frutti and much more. Everyone is welcome to bring a friend. Event is from 7:00-11:00pm. A Sip of Winthrop- November 2
The 5th annual Wine Fest, “A Sip of Winthrop”, will feature wines from around the world, along with beer & cider from local microbreweries. ~There will also be lots of delicious hors d’oeuvres and live entertainment by a jazz trio.
With the guidance of experts, exquisite wines will be tasted from the finest vineyards in France, Italy, Argentina, Chile, Germany, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, and Napa Valley. ~Connoisseurs and neophytes alike will enjoy sampling such a vast array of wines.
“A Sip of Winthrop” takes place on Friday, November 2 from 7:00 – 9:00 pm at the Cottage Park Yacht Club, 76 Orlando Ave., Winthrop. All are welcome. Tickets are $35.00 and include a commemorative wine glass. Jacket required. Tickets are on sale now at Swett’s Liquors, Thompson's Liquors, Winthrop Chamber of Commerce, by phone at 617-846-9898, and online at www.winthropchamber.com. No one under 21 years of age will be admitted. All proceeds benefit the Chamber’s beautification program.
The monthly informal networking event will be held Friday, November 2 from 7:00pm to 9:00pm at the E.B. Newton Cultural Center on the 1st floor. ~This event is free and open to everyone, so bring a friend or two, your other half or a co-worker. ~You don’t have to be from Winthrop. ~Please no children. ~If you have business cards or marketing materials, please bring those. ~Light refreshments will be served.

Join Save the Harbor for a free late season cruise and treasure hunt on Spectacle Island!
On Saturday, October 27th, Save the Harbor / Save the Bay would like you, your family and your friends to join as we set sail on a free late season cruise to discover the "Treasures of Spectacle Island."
The trip will depart at 10:00 AM from the Bay State Cruise Company's dock at the World Trade Center in South Boston aboard the Provincetown II, and return to the dock at 2:30 PM. It is easy to get to the dock by car or the Silver Line. You can get directions at http://www.baystatecruisecompany.com/directions.html.
The cruise will be narrated by Save the Harbor's BayWatcher Bruce Berman, and will be led by our youth program staff, who this year brought 6,000 youth and teens from across the city and around the region to Spectacle and Georges Islands as part of our free "All Access Boston Harbor" program.
They will share their stories of the hidden treasures of the Boston Harbor Islands with you, and we are certain that you will come home with stories and memories which you can treasure yourself.
There will be plenty of time for exploring, hiking, and treasure hunting on the island, though we gently remind you to leave sea glass and artifacts on the beach where you found them. You can find out more about the "Treasures of Spectacle Island" on our website at www.savetheharbor.org/treasures.
Though Jasper White's Summer Shack on Spectacle will be closed for the season, there will be refreshments available for sale on the boat. Of course, you are welcome to pack your own picnic lunch and bring it with you on the trip, but be sure you bring a bag for your trash.
If we choose your story, you will win a blue beach glass marble - and a chance to win 40,000 TrueBlue points from JetBlue Airways as part of our "Simply Marble-ous" treasure hunt, which runs through Halloween.
So bring a camera, a picnic lunch and your friends and family and enjoy a great day in the Boston Harbor Islands National Park with Save the Harbor/Save the Bay!

This "Treasures of Spectacle Island" fall cruise is made possible by a grant from Mass Humanities.
Boy Scout Pack 75 will be holding a food drive on November 2 “under the lights” at Miller Field during the Viking vs. Triton football game. In an effort to give back to the Community, this food drive will benefit the Citizens of Winthrop in need and will assist the food pantry just before Thanksgiving, a time of need for many Winthrop families.

The DPW along with Capital Waster Services will provide limited curbside collection of grass clippings and leaves. Pick up will occur on Saturday, November 17th and Saturday, December 1st. Leaves may be put out on the curb (by 7:00 am) in barrels or compostable /paper bags, weighing no more than 50 pounds. Plastic bags are not acceptable and will not be picked up. At this time the program can only accept grass and leaves, no brush or branches. If you have any questions, please contact the DPW at 617-846-1341.
