Join the Department of Conservation & Recreation, the Friends of Winthrop Beach, and Save the Harbor/Save the Bay for a campfire on Winthrop Beach this Friday, November 30th.
This will take place at Dolphin Avenue from 5:30PM- 7:00PM. There will be mask-making, story-telling and star-gazing, s’mores and free family fun!
The MAPC DLTA Planning project has been making good progress through meetings with members of the Winthrop Planning Board and other members of the community over the last six weeks. The objective of this effort is to provide the town with a strategy for targeted development and redevelopment in the community in the coming years.
The next step in this process will be to solicit input and feedback from the community at a public forum that will be hosted jointly by the town and MAPC on December 11 at 7 p.m. at the Cummings School multi-purpose room.
The purpose of this forum will be to provide a short presentation by MAPC, in which they will frame the discussion for the evening. We will concentrate on developing guiding principles and a vision for future development and redevelopment of Winthrop.
MAPC will take the input and feedback from this forum, along with the information they have already received from members of the Planning Board, local developers and real estate professionals and produce a report outlining some strategies the town can use in developing a plan for redevelopment and new development in Winthrop in the years ahead.
This public forum is open to all and we encourage participation of any local residents, as well as any interested local board members, business owners or town employees.

Congratulations to the Winthrop High Football Cheerleaders! On November 4th, the team competed at the NEC championship and their score qualified them to move onto the regional tournament. The best teams from each section of the state were asked to nominate a team they felt showed superior sportsmanship and hard work that season. On November 18th at the State Championship competition, the cheerleaders were awarded the Gerald H. Silverman award. This is a very prestigious state award that Winthrop High cheerleading had yet to win until this year. The MSSAA feels that teams who promote hard work and superior sportsmanship should be rewarded in hopes that other teams will follow in their footsteps. Being a very young team, this group of girls was very pleased with this award and for placing fifth in Massachusetts.
Their captains Alicia DelVento and Colleen O'Keefe did an amazing job at leading by example. The rest of the team includes:

The National Honor Society Induction Ceremony was held on Monday, November 19th at Winthrop High School. The Town Clerk’s Office is now licensing dogs for the 2013 calendar year. Please download a form online at
and mail it in with proof of rabies, SASE and check made payable to the Town of Winthrop in the amount of $10 and your tag will be mailed to you. You can also pick up a form at the Library, Winthrop Housing Authority, Senior Center or local groomers. Also a License Form will be included in your annual Census this winter. Tags must be purchased before February 1, 2013 to avoid fines. Please check our website for additional information.

The DPW along with Capital Waster Services will provide limited curbside collection of grass clippings and leaves. Pick up will occur on Saturday, December 1st. Leaves may be put out on the curb (by 7:00 am) in barrels or compostable /paper bags, weighing no more than 50 pounds. Plastic bags are not acceptable and will not be picked up. At this time the program can only accept grass and leaves, no brush or branches. If you have any questions, please contact the DPW at 617-846-1341.
