Grade 8 Science teacher Erica Murdoch has been selected by the Massachusetts Afterschool Partnership (MAPS) Program to participate on a Curriculum Review Team for the Summer Zero Robotics Program. Ms. Murdoch will be responsible for reviewing drafts of five units and providing feedback to enhance the program that is being piloted this spring. Ms. Murdoch has previously co-taught the Summer Robotics at Winthrop Middle School through the partnership with MIT, which took 1st place in the competition aboard the International Space Station. Congratulations Ms. Murdoch!
Winthrop Basketball is having a raffle! All proceeds will be used to support the Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball programs. 1st prize is a LG 47” TV with surround sound and Xbox. 2nd prize is Boston sports teams’ jerseys (4). 3rd prize is $100.00 cash. Winners will be drawn at halftime at the Girls’ Varsity game on February 21, 2013. You do not need to be present to win! Tickets are $5 each or 6 for $20. The WHS Varsity Cheerleaders are having a fundraiser: “Skate Night with the Cheerleaders” on Wednesday, February 20th, 6:00pm-8:00pm, at the Mike Eruzione Center at Larry Larsen Rink. Beginning Wednesday April 3, 2013 and continuing for the next 10
weeks, the Winthrop Police Department will be offering its
Civilian Police Academy to Winthrop residents age 18 and over. Winthrop
Officers will instruct classes on subjects such as domestic violence,
police exploring, motor vehicle law, patrol procedures, accidents,
firearms awareness, gangs, juvenile and drug problems, and many other topics relevant to police work. The academy will also include a police ride-along.
This class experience is designed to bring citizens into the station and
give them a clear picture of what it’s like to be a Winthrop Police
Officer. Citizens will learn a great deal about all aspects of police work
and leave with a true representation of life as a police officer.
Classes will be held on Wednesday nights from 6:30pm to 9:00pm for 10 weeks starting on April 3, 2013.

The Annual Census for 2013 has been mailed this week to most homes in Winthrop. The printer we have worked with for many years has had several setbacks which have caused the Census to be several weeks late. Also some return envelopes may have other addresses rather than Winthrop Town Hall. We are aware of the problems and therefore Dog Licenses will not be considered late until March 15, 2013. We will also not be making any deletions from the voting rolls this calendar year based on non-return of the 2013 Census. Every household, apartment unit, and condominium should respond to the census. The information obtained in this office will not be forwarded to any other town department and will have no adverse consequence upon landlords or tenants alike. At the bottom of the Census form, there is web address for Dog Owners
to subscribe to Dog License & Rabies Clinic Information. Please subscribe if you are not already registered in our email blast list. If you are already receiving updates from us you do NOT need to enter your email again. Please note that our Dog Ordinance has changed and to see the full text of the Ordinance visit
To make it more convenient to return your Census, there will be Census Lock Boxes at Winthrop Library & Winthrop Senior Center. Census forms can also be dropped off in the overnight box at the front door of Town Hall. Also, a blank Census will be available on the Town Clerk’s webpage if you wish to download. The address is

Nemo forces Playmakers to reschedule Youth Cast Performances of
"You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown"
Winter storm warnings forced the Playmakers to close their doors this past weekend on what would have been the opening weekend of You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown.~~ The Playhouse is presenting two casts of this show...an adult cast and a youth cast.~~ Children from Winthrop, Saugus and surrounding towns were set to take the stage last weekend, but were upstaged by Storm Nemo.~~ As a result, the Playmakers have amended the schedule as follows.
Thursday, February 14th at 8:30pm~(Youth Cast)
Friday, February 15th at 8:00pm~(Adult Cast)
Saturday, February 16th at 3:00pm (Youth Cast) and 8:00pm (Adult Cast)
Sunday, February 17th at 3:00pm (Adult Cast) and 8:00pm (Youth Cast).
The following weekend (February 22, 23 and 24) was not affected.~~ The Adult Cast will perform Friday and Saturday at 8:00pm and Sunday at 3:00pm.

The Traffic Safety Advisory Committee meeting will be holding a hearing on February 20, 2013 at 8:00 am in the Harvey Hearing Room to discuss the possibility of restricting the parking on Sturgis and Irwin Street to residential parking only. All are welcome to attend.
CAPIC’s HomeCorps Borrower Recovery Program
Through a grant from the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office, CAPIC is offering the HomeCorps Borrower Recovery Initiative. This program provides services to individuals and/or families who are facing imminent foreclosure and those who have already been foreclosed on. Services include: basic housing search assistance, referrals for home loan modification, budget counseling, and referrals to other programs and services. If you are facing foreclosure or have lost your home to foreclosure, please contact CAPIC to set up an appointment.

COASTSWEEP 2012 Thank you!
Many thanks to all of you for making the 25th Anniversary of COASTSWEEP a huge success!!! This year in Massachusetts, more than 2,700 volunteers collected over 14,600 pounds of debris that would otherwise have ended up in the ocean!!! Our final numbers have been submitted to the Ocean Conservancy and will be posted soon on both their webpage and ours. Please be sure to check us out at www.coastsweep.umb.edu and
Again this year, COASTSWEEP’s featured event celebrated the dedication of the Josiah Quincy Upper School, which has been sending students and teachers to COASTSWEEP events for more than five years. 200+ students and teachers from the Josiah Quincy Upper School joined us for a morning of beach cleaning on DCR Carson Beach in South Boston. Together, they collected approximately 100 pounds of trash. Pictures of that event are available on the COASTSWEEP Facebook page.
And finally, if you have any pictures to share with us, please do so. We have been posting some on the COASTSWEEP Facebook page and may have other opportunities to use your pictures in future COASTSWEEP outreach efforts.
