Notice to all Winthrop Ferry riders
The 2013 Winthrop Ferry has been taken out of service, effective Wednesday, July 24, until further notice, to undertake a mechanical repair to the vessel.

On Tuesday, July 23, as the Winthrop Ferry began its final trip of the night back to Winthrop, the boat suffered a mechanical problem with the transmission shaft. Repair of the vessel is expected to take approximately one week, and service during this time will be interrupted.  The Town will announce resumption of service, as soon as the repair has been confirmed by the vessel owner and operator Tim Gover.

We apologize for the inconvenience and will make every effort to resume service in the shortest amount of time feasible. All commuter riders and day trippers are urged to check the town of Winthrop website, for updates on the boat’s status and return of service.  Information can also be obtained by calling 617-846-1078 ext. 1013, or Captain Gover at 617-818-2773.

This Friday there is another Full Moon Open-Mic Night at the Beacon Photography gallery. Starting at 7:00pm there will be several musicians performing live, including French folk singer Jacques Dorier. After 8:00 pm there will be Karaoke. Suggested donation at the door is $5 per person. Kids are welcome.

This summer, Save the Harbor/Save the Bay is again partnering with JetBlue Airways for the "Simply Marble-ous" Treasure Hunt. It is free and easy to enter. If you find a marble on your favorite beach from Nahant to Nantasket, just post a picture of yourself with the marble on Save the Harbor's Facebook page at or email your photo and contact information to

If you don't find a marble, you can still join in the fun. Just make an online contribution at of any amount to Save the Harbor/Save the Bay between July 4th and October 31st and you will be entered into the contest as well.

Of course the marbles are environmentally friendly. "These marbles are made from glass, which is made from sand." said Berman. "It's a great way to encourage people to explore and enjoy the Boston Harbor region's great public beaches."

More than 300 marbles have been "released" so far on Boston area beaches from Nahant to Nantasket by Save the Harbor's summer staff and Better Beaches program partners!
Save the Harbor will announce a new winner each month on our Facebook page at Stay tuned!
