WHS Varsity Baseball Team is off to a great start! Captain James Baxter and his teammates are 3-1. Go Vikings!

Winthrop Middle School hosted the World Series Trophy on Friday, April 18th for all students and staff to view and take pictures with. It was a big hit for all of the Red Sox fans! Pictures have been posted on the WPS Facebook Page. A drawing was held for three Red Sox shirts and the winners were Jillian Kelley, Alex Gibbons, and Michael Fitzpatrick. They were allowed a special “photo-op” with the trophy to start the day!

All of the Law Day participants have been invited to Judge MacDonald’s swearing in ceremony as a new District Judge for East Boston District Court.

Second Grade students enjoyed a visit to Winthrop High School for the Viking Long Ships presentation. Special thanks to George Skane and the Viking Longship students who hosted a fun and educational field trip for our 2nd grade students!

WHS Drama Society is practicing and preparing for their upcoming musical production “Little Shop of Horrors”. You won’t want to miss this fun and entertaining musical performed at Winthrop High School on May 8th, 9th and 10th.

The Arthur T. Cummings Concert Band will have a Spring Concert on Wednesday, May 28th at 7:00pm in the Middle School Auditorium. Mark your calendars!

Celebrate Earth Day

The Friends of Belle Isle Marsh will sponsor the annual Earth Day Cleanup on Saturday, April 26th from 9 – noon at the Bayou Street Marsh area behind the Fort Banks-Gorman School.~ Parking is available at the new Short Beach Park.~ Walk along the John Kilmartin Path and over the pedestrian bridge to the Cleanup, or park at the school and walk along the athletic field to the Bayou Street marsh.~ ~Wear appropriate shoes. Winthrop Seaside Striders 5K Foot Race
The Winthrop Seaside Striders have a promote health and fitness in the Winthrop Community through running and other endurance sports. The race is sponsored by the Point Shirley Athletic Association. All proceeds are donated to Winthrop Parks & Recreation.

Course Information

This year's course will be the same as last year, including a quarter mile of trail running by Lewis Lake and back on to River Road. COURSE starts at Winthrop High School. Left onto Franklin St. Right onto Revere St. Right onto Hutchinson. Right onto Crest Ave., which then becomes Winthrop Shore Drive. Right onto Beacon St. Right onto Shirley St. Left on Cutler St across Veterans Rd to trail across Lewis Lake Park. Right onto River Rd. Right onto Cross St. Right into football field, onto track. Finish on track to thunderous applause.

Winthrop Beach Nourishment Project
April 14, 2014 – April 25, 2014

The following are activities you can expect to see over the next two weeks for the Winthrop Beach Nourishment Project:

Crest Avenue – Winthrop
Excavate and install lighting system
Pave parking lot extension and repave existing lot

Winthrop Beach
Remove and reset revetment along seawall
Deliver armor stones
Reconstruct Groin #3

Saugus – Rumney Marsh
Construct truck entrance at Route 107
Strip and Screen soil

We expect to begin trucking sand in late April. During the week, parking along Crest Ave will be redirected from 9am to 3pm to the newly expanded municipal parking lot.

Questions or concerns about the project should be directed to DCR Resident Engineer Steve Colometo, at the DCR trailer behind the DCR bathhouse on Winthrop Shore Drive, by visit or phone (617-539-4957) during regular business hours, Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

The Winthrop Board of Health would like to announce the 2014 Annual Rabies Clinic will be held on Saturday, May 17th from 9am to 11pm at the old DPW Yard off Winthrop Street behind the Methodist Church. Cost is $10.

Camp Fort is back by popular demand! If you have a student entering kindergarten, first, second or third grade, the perfect program is available to you! The program which runs from July 8th-August 14th, is located right at the school on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8:30-12:30.  The cost for the entire session is $350. An information session will held from 6:30-7:00 followed by registration from 7:00-8:00 p.m. on Thursday May 1st in the Gorman Fort Banks School Multi-Purpose Room.  Caution: Enrollment will be limited to first registered, first enrolled.

Yoga Dance comes to the Winthrop Cultural Center every Tuesday starting on June 24th from 5:00-6:00pm.  First class is free!

S.P.I.R.I.T.S. of NEW ENGLAND Paranormal Investigations of Winthrop is proud to be invited to be part of the Paranormal for Paws Expo on Saturday, April 26th from 1-7. This is a fundraiser for 2 dog shelters and you are welcome to bring YOUR dogs along for a visit! It will be held at MasterPeace Dog Training—264 Fisher Street in Franklin, MA 02038 right off 495. Admission is $10.00 OR $5.00 with the donation of some shelter items, food, bedding, puppy pads, etc.  S.P.I.R.I.T.S. will be there with a vendor table and will also be presenting a lecture and slide show of their 2 night investigation of the USS CONSTITUTION which has proven to be very popular!  If you can’t join us but would like to donate even $5.00 to help or any items you can donate to help these dogs, please call S.P.I.R.I.T.S founder, Ellen MacNeil at 617-846-0282, thank you for caring!!

From Neighbor2Neighbor Fundraiser
Support Winthrop neighbors in need while listening to the award-winning Squeezebox Stompers in a night of folk, blues, Cajun, and Zydeco music. The fundraising event will be held on Saturday, May 3rd from 7-10 PM at the DeLeo Senior Center, 35~Harvard St. in Winthrop. The suggested donation is $10; proceeds from the event support Winthrop’s FromNeighbor2Neighbor organization which provides emergency funds for Winthrop residents facing crisis situations. This fun-filled, all-ages event will include raffle prizes with coffee, tea, soft drinks and desserts available for purchase.~ This program is supported in part by a grant from the Winthrop Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency. Winthrop Police Explorer Dueling Piano Fundraiser
Friday, May 9 at 7:00pm at Cottage Park Yacht Club
Come out and support the Winthrop Police Explorer’s trip to the National Conference this summer in Bloomington, Indiana.

Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at the police station from Lt. Scarpa or Sgt. Rogers.
