Winthrop’s Designation as a Green Community
The Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Richard Sullivan Jr. and the Department of Energy Resources Commissioner Mark Sylvia recognized Winthrop’s designation as a Green Community this morning at the E.B. Newton Cultural Center.

Winthrop was designated as a Green Community in December 2012, after applying for the designation through the Department of Energy Resources and has earned a $169,000 grant to complete energy efficiency projects in town buildings, which will help to decrease the town's use of energy and create savings for town energy budgets.

Today’s event signals the start of the first round of projects that the town will undertake with a portion of that grant funding. The first projects include new lighting and electrical fixtures at the Public Works building, Cummings Elementary and Gorman Fort Banks schools, steam trap upgrades at the Town Hall and EB Newton Center and occupancy based energy efficient HVAC control systems for the Police department.

Congratulations to Winthrop Public Schools! The Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) has approved the Winthrop School Building Assistance Committee’s preferred option of a new middle/high school project! By approving this option, we have now moved into the final phase of schematic design. Once MSBA approves the final stage of schematic design, it will then go to the public for a vote.
