Seventeen members of Mrs. Calinda’s Advanced Drama Class wrote original ten minute plays and submitted them to the Massachusetts Young Playwrights’ Project, sponsored by Boston Playwrights’ Theatre in conjunction with Boston University.  “Misfortune Cookie” by Moriah Goldblatt and “Moving” by Michael Mazzone have been selected as the school winners.  These pieces will be rehearsed and performed by professionals at the festival.  “Untitled” by Sabrina Hitaffer is the school runner-up and will get a staged reading at the festival.  The festival took place on Wednesday, April 10th.  Congratulations!

Congratulations to the Winthrop Middle School March Elks Students of the Month!  Grade 6: Jared LaVigueur & Camila Miranda-Llovera; Grade 7:  Rayshawn Bennett & Jillian Olevitz; Grade 8:  Zach Ayers & Enis Plasvic.  Great job!

Congratulations to the following athletes who were named NEC 2013 Winter Sports All-Stars!  Girls’ Hockey:  Kara Donati, Captain, a Senior from Saugus; Gretchen Howard, 8th Grade Goalie; Julianna Kenendy, Freshman Defenseman; Caroline McKinnon, Sophomore Center; and Cat Salvetti, Junior Captain from Saugus.  Boys’ Basketball:  Josh Babb, Captain Senior Guard. Girls’ Basketball:  Ashelyne Babb, Junior Point Guard.  Boys’ Hockey:  Chris Page, Junior, Assistant Captain.  Boys’ Swimming:  Mike Bruno, Junior Captain and Matt Bruno.  Excellent Job!

Hats off to high school students Mark Tracy and Kelly Russo, who attended the Student Government Day on Friday, April 5th, at the State House.  The students were accompanied by high school teacher Maria Flanagan.  Mark played the role of Speaker of the House!

High school students Eroskin and Kelly Russo have been chosen to participate in the Freedom Foundation Leadership Program in Philadelphia – all expenses paid!  Congratulations!

High school students Adam Holden, Jordan Corbett-Frank, Lexi Vacarro, Mia Simonetti, Eroskin Luska and Stephanie O’Brien have been chosen to attend the United Nations Pilgrimage for Youth sponsored by the Rebecca Lodge & Oddfellows Lodge – all expenses paid.  Congratulations!

Senior college acceptances are starting to come in.  We are thrilled to report that Michael Lessard, school committee student representative, has been accepted to Harvard University!  Nicole O’Brien, school committee student representative, has been accepted to MIT and Georgetown University.  Congratulations and best wishes – we are so excited and happy!

Congratulations to 7th Grade student Nichole Reng who won 1st Place in the Annual Law Day Oratory Competition at East Boston Municipal Court.  The awards celebration will be held on Wednesday, May 1, 2013.  Excellent job Nichole!

WHS Life Skills Annual Fashion Show was held last night and was a huge success.  Hats off to Chris Donnelly and his staff and students!  If you missed the show, check out some of the pictures on our Facebook page - Winthrop Public Schools.

The final phase of the Gorman Fort Banks playground is happening and they need your help!  During April vacation, the outer playground at the Gorman/Fort Banks School will be surfaced.  Currently, the area is filled with mulch, which needs to be removed to allow for the surfacing.  They are looking for volunteers to help move the mulch.  Bring your shovels, rakes, wheel barrels and Bobcats (they’re serious!) Pizza, drinks and community spirit will be available for all volunteers.

Winthrop Beach Nourishment Project
April 4, 2013 – April 18, 2013
The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation is working to revitalize areas of Winthrop Beach to make it safe and user-friendly to its nearby residents. The project is aimed at shore protection, intended to reduce flooding from coastal storms. As a result of the beach nourishment to date, the damage of the winter storms was mitigated. The DCR and McCourt Construction are in their thirteenth week of actual site work on the beach.
McCourt Construction will continue to move forward with its daily excavation on Winthrop Beach. The excavation of the beach should be complete at the end of next week, which will allow the fence to be taken down. The boat ramp demolition is complete, and McCourt will begin forming and reconstructing the ramp in the coming weeks. The new stop logs will be installed in the next few
weeks as well. Repairs and upgrades to the seawall will begin in 2-3 weeks, and a rolling no parking setup will be necessary. Please keep a look out for No Parking signs and message boards on Winthrop Shore Drive in the coming weeks.

Volunteers wanted to assist with new Farmer’s Market
French Square Market organizers also needed.

In an effort to build on last summer’s French Square Market nights, the French Square Market committee is asking for volunteers to come out to help us plan, organize, set up and manage our market nights, and launch a new Farmer’s Market concept.
The committee is a volunteer organization that is in need of people who are willing to roll up their sleeves and do the work necessary to bring a true Farmer’s market to town and at the same time work to improve on the experience of the French Square Market nights that started last summer.
An organizational meeting is currently scheduled for Tuesday, April 23 at the EB Newton Cultural Center in the Lyceum Room at 6 p.m.
The committee will outline its plans for the coming year, assign volunteers to specific duties and begin the process of promoting the plans for the coming summer and fall.
No matter what your talents are, we can find a way to utilize your skills to bring a fun, successful market back to Winthrop for the summer-fall seasons of 2013.

CAPIC Fundraiser

Rita Parisi to perform I am Zelda-a one-act play about
Mrs. F. Scott Fitzgerald

Rita Parisi from Waterfall Productions will present I, Zelda-a one-act play about Mrs. F. Scott Fitzgerald at The E B Newton  Cultural Center, 45 Pauline ST., Winthrop, MA on May 4, 2013 at 7PM.  This original, one-woman play sheds light on the mythical life of Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald, often known as the muse and infamous flapper wife of F. Scott Fitzgerald, author of The Great Gatsby. The play takes place in 1940 and covers Zelda’s childhood years until the death of her husband.
Donations will be accepted at the door.
Rita Parisi has been entertaining audiences for over 17 years in the New England area. In 2002, she founded Waterfall Productions to create shows that highlight her passion for theatre, history, literature and costuming; these shows have been performed all over New England and beyond. Rita is also actively involved in the independent film scene and her films have been debuted at the Boston International Film Festival and Cannes film Festival. She is a proud member of the largest acting union in the country: SAG/AFTRA (formerly the Screen Actors Guild and American Federations of Television and Radio Artists)

Applications are now available for the summer Parks and Recreation jobs program funded by Massport.  Applicants must be 16 years old by July 1, 2013 and be enrolled in a full time high school or college program.

The application must be returned no later than 5PM on Thursday, April 25th to the Parks and Recreation office located in the rear of the middle school with a copy of your birth certificate and a letter of recommendation from someone other than a family member.  If you have previously worked for the program, only the application is required.

The Senior Citizen volunteer Service/Tax Liability Reduction Program allows seniors (over the age of 60), to volunteer their services in exchange for a reduction in their property tax bill.  Participants may earn a maximum reduction of $750.00 per fiscal year based on a rate per hour of service that cannot exceed the Commonwealth’s minimum wage.
Senior Volunteer Tax Program Requirements are:
You must be a tax payer and 60 years of age or older during the tax year when the volunteering is completed and the tax reduction is credited.
To be credited, the volunteer must have an ownership interest and reside in the property year round.
Total reduction will not exceed $750.00.
93 hours must be completed by October 15th of the credited year.
A CORI Release Form must accompany the application.

Volunteers will be selected by lottery.
Lottery winners will be notified of the drawing results and all other pertinent information by the Council on Aging Director shortly after the lottery.
Creditable volunteerism can start immediately following participant notification in conjunction with authorization by the Council on Aging Director.
If any selected volunteer is not able to fully participate, the Town may select another volunteer to participate up to the amount of hours not completed by the original participant.
If you are interested in this program, beginning on March 14, 2013, you can pick-up an application packet at the Senior Center, or Town Hall-Tax Dept.  All applications should be returned to the Senior Volunteer Tax Work-off Program – Council on Aging/Senior Center – 35 Harvard St., Winthrop.  Applications will be accepted until the close of business on Wednesday-April 17, 2013.

Community Garden at the Deleo Senior Center

If you are interested in participating in the Community Garden, there are 4’x4’ plots available.  Applications are available at the senior center and a lottery will be held at the end of March.  This is not just for seniors, anyone can participate.  There is a $20.00 fee per year if you are chosen to cover the costs of maintaining the area and supplying water.  We are hopeful that this will be another successful planting season!

Winthrop Parks~& Recreation

Foxwoods Casino - Enjoy gaming, fine and casual dining and retail shopping. Fee includes MOTOR COACH transportation, $10 food coupon and $10 Free Play! Trip is Sunday, April 14th departing from Cummings School half circle at 9:00am and returning at 9:00pm. Cost is $25.00.

Coupon Training Class - We all know that coupons can save money but have you ever wondered how some people can save so much more!!! Come meet the Winthrop mom, Bettie, the Queen of Coupons, who has perfected the art of using coupons to reduce her family food bill and more.~ Attendees will come away with the tools to save at least the cost of the course off their first grocery trip after applying the lessons learned at the class. Class is Thursday,~~~ April 25, 2013 from 7:00pm - 8:00pm at the E.B. Newton School Cultural Center. Cost is $20.00.
Dog Training - Basic Skills I - A seven week class for beginners of all ages. This class covers all of the basics including sit, down, come, stay, polite leash walking and leave it. Week one is a "no dog" orientation to provide handlers with an overview of class and to learn some basic clicker skills. Dogs attend week 2-7. Class is limited to 6 dogs.

Basic Skills II - A seven week class for the graduates of Basic Skills I. This class will fine tune and link together the behaviors learned in Basic Skills I and will also teach dogs to perform reliably with distractions. NO orientation does attend every class. Class is limited to 6 dogs.~ Class is held at the Winthrop Senior Center on Harvard Street and Cost is $125.00.~ Session is on Thursday evenings beginning April 25th through June 6th.~ Basic skills I from 6:30pm - 7:30pm and Basic Skills II is from 7:45pm - 8:45pm.

Cummings School Running Club - Join Warren MacPhail for this very popular class for children in grades 3-5. An introduction to running with drills to correct running form and improve strength, endurance, and possible speed.~ Class is on Fridays for 5 weeks beginning April 26th from 2:30pm - 3:15pm.~ Cost is $55.00.~ Limited space so register in advance.

Knuckle Bones Athletic Games (Ages 2-4) - This Knuckle Bones program teaches children the fundamentals of sports, builds confidence and develops a passion for athletics and fitness. Games such as Wheel Steal, Castle Ball, Kinball, Flag Wag and Guards brings a plethora of unique development, physical fitness and fun! Traditional games are also played, such as baseball, soccer and basketball, but with a twist to make sure children are challenged, learn new skills and strategies. Course runs for 6 weeks on Thursdays evenings beginning May 9th at Ingleside Park from 5:30pm - 6:30p and cost is $95.00.~ Registration cannot be done online.~ Register at the Recreation office in the rear of the middle school or mail a check to Winthrop Parks and Recreation 151 Pauline Street, Winthrop, MA 02152. Dodge Ball - Children in Grades 3-5 come enjoy a fun game of dodge ball.~ Class is held at the Cummings school gymnasium from 2:30pm - 3:30pm on Thursdays for 6 weeks beginning~~~~ May 2nd.~ Cost is $45.00

Cheerleading Clinic - Join the Winthrop High School cheerleaders and Coaches for this exciting activity.~ Children entering grades 3-8 in the fall will learn basic to intermediate skills, techniques, stunts and tumbling as well as choreographed cheers & dances.~ All participants will perform their newly learned skills and routines on the last night of the clinic for family and friends. Class will be held at the WHS gymnasium from 5:30pm - 7:30pm, Monday through Thursday, June 17, 18, 19, & 20.~ Cost is $90.00.

Winthrop Seaside Striders 5k Foot Race - Winthrop Seaside Striders have a mission to promote health and fitness in Winthrop through running and other endurance sports. Join us on Friday, June 14th at the Winthrop High School. Number pick up on Race Day is 4:30pm - 6:00pm and race begins at 6:30pm. Race details and online registration .~ Cost is $25.00 and guaranteed t-shirt to 1st 200 Entrants.

Summer Activities
Summer Park Program - Now available for registration. Program runs at Ingleside Park from Monday, July 1st through Friday, August 16th ~ between 8:30am - 1:00pm.~ Closed July 4th and 5th.~ Program includes arts & crafts, games, special event days, basketball, tennis, street hockey and many fun activities.~ Discounted Registration of $279 if registered by June 25th.~ After June 25th fee is $299.00.~ Program is for children ages 5 -14, however children under 6 must be accompanied by an adult. Program runs indoors at middle school gym and cafeteria in the event of inclement weather.

Extended Day Summer Camp - Program is for children entering K in the fall through 6th Grade and runs from July 1st through Sept 5th (closed July 4th, 5th, and Sept 2nd ). Children meet at the Recreation center in the rear of the middle school and hours are from 7:30am -5:30pm.~ Each child must first be registered for the Park Program since Extended Day participates in the morning park program each day. Registration must be at the Recreation office, however a packet may be downloaded from before you come in.
Challenger Sports - British S occer Camp - Participants will love this week-long soccer camp which focuses on basic skills and having fun!~ Fee includes Ball & T-Shirt! Camp runs August 19 through August 23rd at Cellucci Field on Kennedy Road.~ Ages 3-4 from 9:00am - 10:00am with a cost of $87.00, ages 5-8 from 10:00am -11:30am with a cost of $100.00 and ages~~~~~ 9-14 from 12pm - 3pm for $135.00.

Legos Engineering Camp -
Engineering Fundamentals with Legos (Ages 8 - 11) - Power up your engineering skills with Play-Well TEKnologies and over 100,000 pieces of LEGO®! Apply real-world concepts in physics, engineering, and architecture through engineer-designed projects such as arch bridges, skyscrapers, motorized cars, and the Battletrack! Challenging for new and returning students.~ Pre-Engineering with Legos (Ages 5-7) - Build enigineer-designed projects such as boats, bridges, mazes, and motorized cars.~ Explore the endless creative possibilities of the Lego building system with the guidance of an experienced Play-well instructor.~ Class is Monday through Friday August 26 -August 30 at the Recreation Center in the middle school.~ Ages 8-11 is from 9:00am - 12:00pm and ages 5-7 from 1:00pm - 4:00pm. Cost is $165.00.
