FEMA is currently re-mapping the Town of Winthrop for a new flood map. Over the past few years, Councilor Craig Mael has been watching this development as it creates an issue for many of Winthrop’s residents.  According to his information, the new flood map review process is underway. It will take some time but in mid to late 2014 the new maps could be in effect.

The real issue for homeowners is the cost of the new insurance, which your mortgage company may require you to obtain.  This can be expensive. According to Mr. Mael’s insurance contacts, if you presently have flood insurance you are grandfathered into the lower rate. If you are placed in a flood zone and you are not covered, the rate can be much higher. The time to react and educate yourself is now.

Reach out immediately to your insurance agent and become involved in this process. The cost can be as much as several thousand per year. Be wise, be aware and get educated today!  For more information, you can visit http://www.craigmael.com

Craig Mael has challenged all citizens to help the Town by cleaning up the weeds that have grown around sidewalks, curbs and tree's. If you have or are willing to plant the area around the tree's or tree cutouts that are on or near your property and send a picture to Craig, he will give a $25.00 cash award to the best one. The photos need to be submitted by August 31st. The award will be given at the first Town Council Meeting in September. More information will be available on his web site http://www.craigmael.com

Winthrop Restaurant Week
August 18-22 & 25-29

The event restaurant-goers have been salivating for is coming! The Winthrop Chamber of Commerce is proud to put on the 2013 “Winthrop Restaurant Week”. Running for two weeks, from Sunday, August 18 through Thursday, August 22 and Sunday, August 25 to Thursday, August 29, diners will enjoy three-course dinner specials for $20.13 at Winthrop’s finest restaurants.
“Our goal in putting on this event is to let patrons know what excellent restaurants Winthrop has to offer,” said Eric Gaynor, executive director of the Winthrop Chamber of Commerce. “Our event will coincide with Boston’s Restaurant Week. However, we believe ours is a much better value with no tolls, ease of parking, friendly service, and excellent food.”
Restaurant Week is an easy and economical way to sample new restaurants and visit old favorites as chefs prepare delectable meals. The three-course prix fixe dinners include an appetizer, entrée, and dessert. This cannot be combined with any other offer or promotion and does not include tax, gratuity, or beverages.
“Winthrop’s dining scene has been getting a lot of attention lately,” said Gaynor. “The town was profiled as a ‘Delicious Destination’ by TV Diner and the Phantom Gourmet has several favorites here.”
“We think that Restaurant Week will be an opportunity for everyone to enjoy what Winthrop has to offer. They will be delighted at the variety of cuisine and the talented chefs we have here.”

Participating in the event are the Winthrop Arms, 130 Grovers Avenue; Café Rossetti’s, 115 Winthrop Shore Drive; D’Parma Ristorante, 467 Shirley Street; Alia Ristorante, 495 Shirley Street; Rustic Table, 503 Shirley Street; Osaka Lucky Garden, 522 Shirley Street; Kasbah, 59 Putnam Street; La Siesta, 70 Woodside Avenue; and Hong Kong Dragon, 68 Woodside Aveneue.
