Last week was Bullying Awareness Week at Winthrop Middle School. Assistant Principal Ryan Heraty formed a committee comprised of teachers, students, and community members. Extended homerooms of 35 minutes were incorporated this week allowing teachers to deliver lessons based on bullying awareness, cyber bullying, and positive conflict resolutions. Jackie Lamonte, from the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office gave a presentation Friday morning and the students marched to Winthrop Center with a police escort, and then formed a human peace sign. Thank you to all involved. Winthrop Stands Up to Bullying!

Winthrop Playmakers Announce Upcoming Performance of Steel Magnolias

Join the Winthrop Playmakers as they continue their milestone 75th season with their upcoming production of Steel Magnolias, directed by Stephanie Manning.

Set in small-town Louisiana, Robert Harling’s Steel Magnolias has come to be one of the quintessential stories of friendship and trust. Truvy owns a local-homegrown beauty salon, where all the ladies who are “anybody” go to have their hair done. Six very different women who regularly gather there come together to share their secrets, fears and love for one another while engaging the audience in hysterical and neighborly gossip.  With characters that are touching, hilarious, and entirely realistic, Steel Magnolias is a production not to be missed.

Steel Magnolias’ ensemble cast includes Stephanie Cotten-Snell as Truvy, Christina Lonardo as Annelle, Nancy Tutunjian Berger as Clairee, Stanis Johnson as Shelby, Juliana Dennis as M’Lynn, and Carolyn Cafarelli as Ousier.  Running November 15, 16, 22, & 23 at 8:00PM with matinee performances November 17 and 24 at 3:00PM, you can purchase tickets now by visiting our website www.winthropplaymakers.com or by calling 617-539-1175.  Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for students and seniors.

The Winthrop Parks Committee
Coughlin Park and Pond Street are the next parks scheduled to be renovated.
Purchase an engraved brick to show your support for renovations and ongoing maintenance of our Town parks. Bricks are being used around the parks as entry ways or pathways.  Trees and receptacles are also available.  Funds raised will go directly into a special fund set up by the Town of Winthrop to help support renovations and maintenance for all of our neighborhood parks.

Would you like to present a brick as a gift or memorial?  Small keepsake mini replicas of the larger bricks are available.  The 11/2”X 3” or 3”X3” replicas are a great way to present your gift brick especially if your recipient is out of state.

Checks can be made payable to the Town of Winthrop, write Parks Renovations in the memo section and mail to Parks and Recreation, 151 Pauline Street, Winthrop MA 02152.
For more information or questions, please go to www.winthropparks.org
You can also email the parks committee at winthropparks@gmail.com
