From the desk of the Town Manager…
Congratulations to Winthrop resident John Macero, who has been selected as the new superintendent of the Winthrop Public Schools. Macero will officially take office on July 1 pending the completion of negotiations of his contract. He will succeed Dr. Joseph Lisi, who has been the interim superintendent.
With the summer fast approaching, we are looking forward to the return of the ferry service at the Winthrop Landing. The ferry be in operation soon, and there will be an expansion of the schedule of trips going to Boston and returning to Winthrop. The new schedule will include weekend trips in July and August and a 10:00 pm departure from Boston for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights in July and August.
Winthrop High School student Carmen Tracey has been granted admission to Harvard University as a member of the incoming class of 2015. Carmen is the number 1 ranked student in her class. She also is the leader of the WHS Mock Trial team that advanced to the final eight in the statewide competition. Congratulations Carmen!
Town Clerk Carla Vitale has been asked by the Mass Town Clerk's Association to be an instructor at the Mass City & Town Clerk's Association Summer Conference in June to co-teach a class on Parliamentary Procedure.
The Senior Center just had all new carpets installed and received a new computer lab thanks to the Flanagan family. Also, a new TV was donated by Mike Eruzione. Thank you to these generous donors.
On May 25th the Senior Center is having a big Spring Fling Luncheon. The event will be featuring great entertainment, and showcasing their tapdance group the Seaside Tappers, and the Senior Chorus. Also, on June 8th the Senior Center will be having a Volunteer Luncheon in which they will honor and thank all the Senior Center volunteers for a job well done throughout the year. They have almost 60 volunteers!
The 42nd Annual Winthrop Art Association Spring Arts Festival will be held on Saturday, April 30 and Sunday, May 1 at the Winthrop Senior Center. The times for the festival are from 12 to 6 p.m. on Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, with a reception for the artists and their works from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Art will be displayed throughout the Senior Center, both for exhibition to the public and for sale by the artists.
*Save the Date- On May 28th, 2011 we will be hosting a fundraising gala for the E.B.Newton School and Cultural Center. The tickets will be $25 per person and all of the proceeds will go to the restoration of the building. The event will run from 7:00 to 10:00. There will be hor d'oeuvres, a cash bar, and live music from the Ted Wirt Orchestra. This will be a fun evening and a great time to see the changes that are happening at the E.B. Newton. Formal dress is required. Tickets will be available at the Town Manager's Office through May 12th.
