Our weekly newsletter that highlights some of the positive things
happening around town.

Walk Winthrop, a proposal to develop a linked pedestrian and/or bicycle trail system within town for citizens to easily and safely access our town businesses, schools, parks, beaches, and public transportation has received funding.  Implementation of Walk Winthrop will create a more bike-friendly and pedestrian friendly community, and will promote community health, environmental sustainability, and alternative transportation modes.

Alan Thibeault, Library Director, was installed as President of the Beta Beta Chapter of Beta Phi Mu (International Library and Information Studies Honor Society) on April 14th.  Congratulations Alan!

John Lanza, author of "Shot Down Over Italy" will give a presentation at the Winthrop Public Library & Museum in the Library's Hazlett Room at 7 p.m. on April 28th. This event is free of charge and open to the public.
The Winthrop Chamber of Commerce will be hosting its 6th annual Springtime Sidewalk Sale on Saturday, May 14th.  This is a town wide event encouraging people to have their yard sales on this day, as well as featuring local shops and businesses that are right here in town.  This will be held in conjunction with the Winthrop Art Association, which will have tables set up in French Square to show off the works of local artists.  There will also be a Touch A Truck event at the Cummings School, music at French Square, kids events at Kathy’s Place, and one of the official New England Patriots Cheerleaders to take pictures with and sign autographs!

On Saturday, May 7th, there will be a Disability Resource Fair at the Senior Center.

Tomorrow, Wednesday April 27th, there will be a clothing drive at the Fort Banks School from 7:45 to 10:30.  This is a great time to clean out your closet and raise money for the Fort Banks School.  They will accept clothes, shoes (please tie them together), sheets, curtains, belts and stuffed animals.  Thank you!

This week is the kick off of this year’s street sweeping season. The DPW is requesting your help! Our town-wide street sweeping program will occur on the last full week of the months of April, May, June, September and October on the day of your trash pickup. These are our best opportunities to really make a positive effect on the appearance of the Town, so please comply with Town ordinances and move vehicles from the streets so that we can have unobstructed access to the curb. Also, please refrain from mounding piles of debris, trash or leaves. These small piles have a negative effect on the performance of the sweeper, who’s primary goal is to remove grit, oils, grease and metallic particles that have the potential to impair our surround water resources. Piles of trash belong in your trash barrels and piles of leaves are a reusable product that belongs at the compost site. Help us make the most of this effort to make Winthrop look her best.  Thank you!

On May 28th, 2011 we are hosting a fundraising gala for the E.B.Newton School and Cultural Center.  The tickets are $25 per person and all of the proceeds will go to the restoration of the building.  The event will run from 7:00 to 10:00.  There will be hordourves, a cash bar, and live music from the Ted Wirt Orchestra.  This will be a fun evening and a great time to see the changes that are happening at the E.B. Newton.  Formal dress is required.  Tickets are available at the Town Manager’s Office now through May 12th.
