The Winthrop Public Library & Museum will host award-winning author Michael Tougias in the Hazlett Room at 7 pm on May 19th. Mr. Tougias is the author of Overboard!: A True Bluewater Odysset of Disaster and Survival. He will also give survival tips for those at risk of getting caught in a storm at sea. This program, sponsored by the Friends of the Winthrop Public Library and the Winthrop Cultural Council is free and open to the public. All are invited. Books will be available for sale and signing at the event.
Winthrop Cares is having a Town Wide Clean-up on Sunday, May 15th from 3:00-6:00. Locations around town include:
*Crest Ave Park
*Shore Drive- Beacon Circle
*Lewis Lake Playground
*High School Baseball field
Pizza party @ Ingleside park afterwards!
May 14th is the annual NALC (National Association of Letter Carriers) Stamp Out Hunger National Food Drive- the largest one-day food drive in the nation and probably the world. All citizens need do is to place a box or can of non-perishable food next to their mailbox before their letter carrier delivers mail every second Saturday in May. The carrier will do all the rest. The food is taken back to a postal station, sorted, and then delivered to an area food bank or pantry. There it is available for needy families. The Winthrop Chamber of Commerce will be hosting its 6th annual Springtime Sidewalk Sale on Saturday, May 14th. This is a town wide event encouraging people to have their yard sales on this day, as well as featuring local shops and businesses that are right here in town. This will be held in conjunction with the Winthrop Art Association, which will have tables set up in French Square to show off the works of local artists. There will also be a Touch A Truck event at the Cummings School, music at French Square, kids events at Kathy’s Place, and one of the official New England Patriots Cheerleaders to take pictures with and sign autographs!
The Winthrop High School Drama Club will be performing "Grease" for the annual spring musical. Performance dates are Saturday, May 14th at 2:00pm and 7:00pm, and Sunday, May 15th at 2:00pm. Location is Fortunato Hall, Winthrop High School.
Join the Friends of Belle Isle Marsh as they explore the marshes of Belle Isle by Canoe. If interested, people will be meeting at the main parking lot on Bennington Street in East Boston. Paddling experience required. Participants must be able to swim and be at least 10 years old. Saturday, May 28th from 8:30 to 10:30am. BIG RECYCLE DRIVE on June 11th at Woodside Hardware (8-11am). Save your cans and bottles and ALL ELECTRONICS. Clean out the clutter and get rid of old TVs, computers, space heaters, air conditioners, stereos, car batteries and anything else you think of that is electronic. Save big and pay a fraction of regular disposal fees to benefit the Fort Banks School!
The 2011 Seaside Stride, a 5 Kilometer (3.1 mile) road race along the Atlantic Ocean in lovely Winthrop, Massachusetts will be held on Friday June 10th at 6:30 pm. On May 28th, 2011 we are hosting a fundraising gala for the E.B.Newton School and Cultural Center. The tickets are $25 per person and all of the proceeds will go to the restoration of the building. The event will run from 7:00 to 10:00. There will be hordourves, a cash bar, and live music from the Ted Wirt Orchestra. This will be a fun evening and a great time to see the changes that are happening at the E.B. Newton. Formal dress is required.
