This Saturday, May 28th, we are hosting a fundraising gala for the E.B.Newton School and Cultural Center.  The tickets are $25 per person and all of the proceeds will go to the restoration of the building.  The event will run from 7:00 to 10:00.  There will be hor dourves, a cash bar, and live music from the Ted Wirt Orchestra.  This will be a fun evening and a great time to see the changes that are happening at the E.B. Newton.  Formal dress is required.  Tickets are available at the Town Manager’s Office and the Chamber of Commerce.  For more information, call 617-846-1077.

During the E.B. Newton Gala, The Winthrop Cultural Council will be exhibiting the works of Frank Costantino entitled "An Artist's Hometown Views with Selected Illustrations of Architecture at The Clock Tower Gallery.

Grant administrator Peter Lombardi graduated this past weekend from Suffolk University with his Master in Public Administration from the Sawyer Business School. He received the Outstanding MPA Student Award for 2011 and was also inducted into Pi Alpha Alpha, the National Honor Society for Public Affairs and Administration.

Ferry service between Winthrop and Boston has returned!  On Monday, May 16th Boston Harbor Cruises once again began taking commuter passengers to Boston on three morning trips to the city and three return trips in the afternoon and early evenings.  For the months of July and August, there will be weekend service as well.

Winthrop Cares had a Spring Town wide clean up this past Sunday.  Volunteers cleaned up areas all over town including Yirrell Beach, Shore Drive and Ingleside Park.  Thank you to all the volunteers who helped to make this a successful event.

This past Saturday, May 21st, hardworking volunteers led by Richard Honan paid tribute to our veterans by cleaning up the cemetery for this weekend’s Memorial Day Services.  Thank you to those who took time to honor those who defended this country.

Join the Friends of Belle Isle Marsh as they explore the marshes of Belle Isle by Canoe.  If interested, people will be meeting at the main parking lot on Bennington Street in East Boston.  Paddling experience required.  Participants must be able to swim and be at least 10 years old.  Saturday, May 28th from 8:30 to 10:30am.  Registration is required by calling MA DCR at 781-485-2803 ext.109.  Also, canoe with DAD!  Father’s Day, June 19th at 2:00 pm.  Registration is required by calling DCR at 617-727-1199 ext. 410.   

The 2011 Seaside Stride, a 5 Kilometer (3.1 mile) road race along the Atlantic Ocean in lovely Winthrop, Massachusetts will be held on Friday June 10th at 6:30 pm. We provide top of the line timing services, a water stop, lovely views, post race snacks and tunes, a goodie bag and division awards. To register, please go to

BIG RECYCLE DRIVE on June 11th at Woodside Hardware (8-11am). Save your cans and bottles and ALL ELECTRONICS. Clean out the clutter and get rid of old TVs, computers, space heaters, air conditioners, stereos, car batteries and anything else you think of that is electronic. Save big and pay a fraction of regular disposal fees to benefit the Fort Banks School!
