The Town of Winthrop has completed the installation of twenty six new bike racks around the community. “These bicycle racks have been situated strategically at a variety of locations to encourage people of all ages to use alternative modes of transportation, especially in the these beautiful summer months,” said Peter Lombardi, Town Grants Adminstrator. Funding for the bike racks was secured through the Metropolitan Area Planning Council’s Regional Bike Parking program. “With these new racks in place, the Town’s overall capacity for bike parking has been more than doubled with over two hundred spaces now available,” said Lombardi. “Working with the Parks and Recreation Director and Public Works personnel, their placement was carefully calculated so that all areas where recognized demand existed were addressed.”
Town Manager James McKenna says, “Winthrop is a close-knit seaside community with abundant natural resources and the more that we can do to encourage a broader appreciation of these strengths the better. From Belle Isle Marsh to Yirrell Beach, there is a reason that the residents of this town have such a deep sense of pride in where they come from. What we are hoping to do is give them another way to enjoy the Town and expose residents from neighboring communities to all that Winthrop has to offer.”
The Winthrop Public Schools are conducting a community survey in regards to our school Rebuilding Process. The survey will begin Monday, July 25th and~end on Monday August 8th.~ The survey will assist the School Building Committee with which options to explore for the Feasibility Study for Winthrop High School.~ To take the survey, go to: http://www.town.winthrop.ma.us/Pages/index and then click on Winthrop Public School Building Survey under News and Announcements. In addition, the School Building Committee will conduct two public hearings.~ The dates are
Thursday, August 11th at 7pm and Tuesday, August 16th at 7pm.~ Both public hearings will be held in the Harvey Room at Town Hall.
It was another successful track and field event at Miller Field for the Winthrop Special Olympics Athletes this year. The weather was great and the turn out was also great. Thanks to Council Vice President Linda Calla who is a regular attendee, special thanks to Council Members Larry Powers and Nick DelVento for not only coming down but also helping serve at the cookout. A special thanks also goes out to all the police officers, their families and the Chief of Police for all that they did to make this event such a success. It's been 17 years since the police partnered with WINARC, and they’re looking forward to many more happy years together! Thank you to all.
The Winthrop School of Performing Arts presents “The Wizard of Oz” at Winthrop High School on July 27th, 28th, and 29th at 7 pm. Tickets are available by calling 617-846-5299 or they will be available to purchase at the door.
The Winthrop Art Association is having a mini Arts Festival on Saturday, August 13th from 9 am until 2 pm at Crest Ave Park in the Winthrop Highlands. Art and crafts from Art Association members will be available to view and purchase. Support our local artisans!
WCAT is hosting its Annual Cookout Fundraiser on Saturday, August 6th at 1:00 at the Winthrop Elks. Tickets are $10.00 and include an all you can eat BBQ. Plus, there will be great live music outside, a cash bar, and raffles. This is a rain or shine event. You must be over 21 years of age. Tickets are available at WCAT- 165 Winthrop Street or by calling 617-846-3400. All proceeds benefit the WCAT equipment fund.
BOSTON HARBOR ISLANDS EXHIBIT: The Winthrop Public Library & Museum is hosting an exhibit on the top floor of the Frost Building about the Boston Harbor Islands. The exhibit, put together by the Friends of the Boston Harbor Islands, tells about the Islands, its lighthouses, includes a map of the National Park and its origins as well as geological, plant and animal features on the islands. There is also information about how the Friends help the parks and what volunteer opportunities exist. The exhibit is free and open to the public during normal library hours (Mon.-Wed.-Fri. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tue.-Thurs. 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.). Fliers containing more information on the Friends and the Harbor Islands can be found in the foyer inside the main entrance to the Library. The exhibit is schedule to run through Labor Day.
The Winthrop Cultural Council is presenting an exhibit Hot Fun In The Summer Time (selected works of art with a summer theme – featuring many works from members of The Winthrop Art Association) at The Clock Tower Gallery at the E.B. Newton School & Cultural Center. Gallery Hours: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays 2-4 p.m. through August 25, 2011.
Tickets are on sale now from the Winthrop Chamber of Commerce for its annual Sunset Cruise on Boston Harbor. The two & a half hour excursion will be Wednesday, August 3 leaving from the Town Pier at the Public Landing, 707 Shirley Street. Boarding is at 6:30 p.m., returning at 9:30 p.m. The elegant premier vessel of Boston Harbor Cruises, the Majesty, will take a scenic tour of the inner harbor. A fun way to beat the heat, it is a relaxing night out with friends and neighbors. Back by popular demand, the band “FineLine” with John and Lori Wadkins will be providing the evening’s entertainment. Call 617-846-9898 or stop by the office at 207 Hagman Road for tickets. The Winthrop Playmakers is sponsoring a walk-a-thon on Saturday, August 13th from 9:30am - 12:30pm to help raise money for their Turn Up the Volume fund. Funds raised will go towards improving the sound system at the Playhouse. Starting at the Playhouse, located at 60 Hermon Street, the walk will go to Deer Island and then "back to the Playhouse" for a bite to eat. Get people to sponsor you on the walk. The Winthrop Lodge of Elks is hosting its annual Help Hook the Cure Derby on August 27th, 2011. This is a fun day for a great cause. If you are interested in participating in the fishing tournament, you can contact Norman Hyett at 617-909-0912. Otherwise, people are welcome to come down to the Elks to watch the Derby and enjoy the day. Lunch will be available to purchase from 2:00-4:00. All funds raised will go to the Michael J. Fox’s Parkinson’s Research Foundation.
The first annual Neil Shapiro Charity event will take place on September 17th and 18th. On Saturday, September 17th there will be a 5K kick-off party at Winthrop Yacht Club from 6-11pm. Enjoy a pasta dinner and entertainment by cover band Somerset. This event is for ages 18+. Tickets are available in advance at www.active.com for $15 or at the door for $20. Then on Sunday, September 18th there will be a walk/run around Deer Island. Registration for walkers and runners begins at 9:00am, and then the walk/run will
begin at 11:00am. Registration is $25 before September 10th and $30 after. Carpooling is recommended, as parking is limited. All proceeds will benefit Viking Pride. Neil has been gone 10 years, but never forgotten!
