Congratulations to Bobbie Finocchio, who has been appointed as the new principal at the Authur T. Cummings Elementary School. Ms. Finocchio graduated from Winthrop High School and then went on to receive her Bachelors degree from Regis College. She also holds a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Salem State College and a Master’s degree in Special Education from Regis College. She has been a special education teacher at the Cummings School for the past six years. We wish her all the best in her first year as principal!
Congratulations to the Middle School Science Team for winning the MIT Robotics competition! The team consisted of 14 students from grades six, seven, eight and nine and was lead by seventh grade science teacher Chris Farnsworth and eighth grade science teacher Erica Murdoch. The team was informed they were the winners by a US astronaut from an international space station. The team beat out four other middle school teams to win the championship plaque. Great job!
We would like to commend Kelly Russo, a sophomore at Winthrop High School, for taking her passion for music and working towards making it accessible for high school kids. Kelly appeared before the School Committee last week asking that music be added to the curriculum. She received a standing ovation and inspired the School Committee to look into the feasibility of adding music to the High School curriculum.

MyRWA Photo Contest
The Mystic River Watershed Association is seeking photographs that illustrate the beauty and challenges of the Mystic River Watershed. Contest categories include (1)Plants, (2)Wildlife, (3)Landscape and (4)Recreation & Appreciation. Photos must be taken within the Mystic River Watershed and be submitted by 5pm on Friday, October 14. The first annual Neil Shapiro Charity event will take place on September 17th and 18th. On Saturday, September 17th there will be a 5K kick-off party at Winthrop Yacht Club from 6-11pm. Enjoy a pasta dinner and entertainment by cover band Somerset. This event is for ages 18+. Tickets are available in advance at www.active.com for $15 or at the door for $20. Then on Sunday, September 18th there will be a walk/run around Deer Island. Registration for walkers and runners begins at 9:00am, and then the walk/run will
begin at 11:00am. Registration is $25 before September 10th and $30 after. Carpooling is recommended, as parking is limited. All proceeds will benefit Viking Pride. Neil has been gone 10 years, but never forgotten!
The Chamber of Commerce’s sixth annual “Taste of Winthrop” will be held on Wednesday, September 21st at the Winthrop Yacht Club from 6:00-9:00pm. Over 30 area eating establishments will be offering everything from appetizers to desserts. Tickets are on sale at the Chamber of Commerce office, 207 Hagman Road and at Luna Boutique, 3 Bartlett Road. Tickets are also available online at www.winthropchamber.com or by calling 617-846-9898.
Winthrop photpgrapher Kevin Welch is currently exhibiting bird portraits on canvas in the Basch Room. Mr. Welch is an active member of the local photographic community, working in scenic landscapes, nature and wildlife. The works, stunning in clarity and color, may be viewed whenever the Library is open. Proceeds generated from Mr. Welch’s photography benefit The Jimmy Fund. The Winthrop Improvement & Historical Association presents A Night With Mel Simons, a humorist, accordionist and musical historian. This event will be held on Saturday, October 1st from 7:30 to 8:30pm at the Barn at the Dean Winthrop House at 40 Shirley Street. Donation is $12. Reserve your tickets by calling 617-846-7421.
