Wednesday, October 19, 2010 will be the last day to register to vote for the upcoming Local Election on Tuesday, November 8, 2011. The Town Clerk’s Office will be open on October 19th, from 8am to 8pm for citizen convenience.
The only requirements to register to vote are that you are a citizen of the United States, a resident of Winthrop and will be 18 years old on or before Election Day. You may register in the Town Clerk’s Office, or you may request a mail-in registration form by phone or log onto http://www.sec.state.ma.us/ele/elestu/stuidx.htm. Those registering to vote using mail-in registration forms must have their forms postmarked no later than October 19th, 2011 in order to vote in the State Election.
Correction: Last week we listed the students that were the recipients of the James Otis Scholarship. David Gallo, a member of the class of 2013 at Winthrop High School, was also a recipient. The other students are Sean Egan, Jerry Driscoll, Joseph Gobiel, Moriah Goldblatt, Jennie Maibor, and Kaitin Tarrio. They will be honored at the State House on Thursday, September 15th, 2011.
The Neil Shapiro 5K walk/run was held this past Sunday and was very successful! $10,000.00 was raised for the Winthrop High School Drama Department, and the Viking Pride Foundation has agreed to match the funds for a total of $20,000.00!!
Parks and Recreation will be having their annual Fall Fair on Saturday, October 8th at Ingleside Park from 11am -3pm.

FRIENDS AND FAMILY 5K WALK THIS SATURDAY
The Friends and Family Second Annual~5k Walk for Recovery and Prevention of Substance Abuse will take place this coming Saturday, September 24, 2011 at 10 am~at Ingleside Park. Pre-registration begins at 9:00 AM. Bring the family; enjoy a day at the park with face painting, a DJ from Kathy’s Place, a Zumba Dance demonstration from the Winthrop School of Performing Arts, a bouncy house for the kids, complements of For Kids Only After School Program and music featuring The Winthrop High School Jazz Band. Winthrop Marketplace will provide bottled water, and healthy snacks.
This year they will also be walking to support For Kids Only Afterschool (FKO), a local, non-profit after school program, which serves the communities of Winthrop, Everett, Revere, Peabody and Salem. FKO provides year-round academic, recreational and social opportunities that promote learning and self-esteem building to children and families. Their programs offer children enriching, fun and engaging experiences and serve children from all backgrounds including those who are disadvantaged, have special needs or disabilities, or otherwise considered at-risk.
This past year, Friends & Family has made great strides in helping families that are dealing with addiction and substance abuse. Their weekly meetings, held at the Winthrop Senior Center, have provided Winthrop residents with parent workshops, guest speakers, Nar-Can training and educational materials for families. Many families and individuals have taken advantage of this program to seek assistance in dealing with issues associated with substance abuse.
One of the goals of Friends & Family this year is to work closely with the new Winthrop School District Administration to create substance abuse awareness program here in Winthrop. They are hoping to create a program similar to the 8th Grade Drug Summit that is currently offered to the students of the Melrose Public Schools. With a successful fundraising effort this year, they will also be making individual donations to the 21st Century Program @ Kathy’s Place in Winthrop, which is a program designed to keep kids off the streets and provide them with after school programs. They will also be making a donation to The Meridian House in East Boston, a residential treatment house for recovering Individuals to drugs and alcohol. For more information contact Linda Vecchia at

The Winthrop Art Association is having an open free demonstration “The Art and History of Tattooing” featuring Joe “Zaza” Peterson tattoo artist. This will take place on Tuesday, October 4th at 7:30pm at the E.B. Newton Cultural Center on the 1st floor. All are welcome. For more information, contact Dawn at 617-846-2644.
The Winthrop Art Association is having a Fall Day Trip to Ogunquit Museum of American Art on Sunday, October 23rd. Lunch on your own at Perkins Cove, Ogunquit, Maine. On the way back they will stop at the Kittery, Maine outlet shops. The price is $35.00 per person. A $15.00 deposit is required. For more information, contact Dawn at 617-846-2644.
The Winthrop Public Library and Museum welcomes S.P.I.R.I.T.S. of New England, Paranormal Investigations: Keys to the Other Side. S.P.I.R.I.T.S. of New England is a small, dedicated group of paranormal investigators working out of Winthrop. They have investigated with T.A.P.S. (from TV’s “Ghost Hunters”) and conducted investigations at private homes, the Deane Winthrop House and other historic locations in New England. Join the Library for a multi-media presentation on how they do their work and see and hear some of the evidence they have collected. This event will take place on Saturday, September 24th, from 3:00-4:00pm in the Hazlett Room.
On Sunday, October 2nd from 1 to 3 p.m. the Belle Isle Harvest Festival will take place. There will be horse-drawn hayrides, pumpkin decorating, animals with the “Creature Teacher”, live music, the Mass Oyster Project, display tables, art and more.
Winthrop photpgrapher Kevin Welch is currently exhibiting bird portraits on canvas in the Basch Room. Mr. Welch is an active member of the local photographic community, working in scenic landscapes, nature and wildlife. The works, stunning in clarity and color, may be viewed whenever the Library is open. Proceeds generated from Mr. Welch’s photography benefit The Jimmy Fund. The Winthrop Improvement & Historical Association presents A Night With Mel Simons, a humorist, accordionist and musical historian. This event will be held on Saturday, October 1st from 7:30 to 8:30pm at the Barn at the Dean Winthrop House at 40 Shirley Street. Donation is $12. Reserve your tickets by calling 617-846-7421. The Winthrop Art Association is having a Holiday Fair on Saturday, November 19th from 9:00am – 2:00pm at the EB Newton Cultural Center.
