22 students have received a perfect score (280) on the 2010 MCAS test.  They will be recognized at the next School Committee on October 13, 2011.

There will be a Fort Banks Elementary School Fundraiser at Twist & Shake (482 Shirley Street, Winthrop) on Tuesday, October 4th.  20% of all proceeds will go to the Fort Banks School.  Come down and support your local school and enjoy some ice cream!

The Friends of Belle Isle Marsh and the Department of Conservation and Recreation are sponsoring the annual Belle Isle Harvest Festival on Sunday, October 2nd from 1 to 3 p.m.  There will be horse-drawn hayrides, pumpkin decorating, animals with the “Creature Teacher”, the Mass Oyster Project, display tables, art and more.  There will also be live music from the popular 7-piece Afro-Latin Caribbean band Ten Tambao.  Bring your dancing shoes to enjoy this great Salsa band!  This festival is free and open to the public.

Parks and Recreation will be having their annual Fall Fair on Saturday, October 8th at Ingleside Park from 11am -3pm.

The Winthrop Art Association is having an open free demonstration “The Art and History of Tattooing” featuring Joe “Zaza” Peterson tattoo artist.  This will take place on Tuesday, October 4th at 7:30pm at the E.B. Wednesday, October 19, 2010 will be the last day to register to vote for the upcoming Local Election on Tuesday, November 8, 2011. The Town Clerk’s Office will be open on October 19th, from 8am to 8pm for citizen convenience.

The only requirements to register to vote are that you are a citizen of the United States, a resident of Winthrop and will be 18 years old on or before Election Day. You may register in the Town Clerk’s Office, or you may request a mail-in registration form by phone or log onto Those registering to vote using mail-in registration forms must have their forms postmarked no later than October 19th, 2011 in order to vote in the State Election.
The Winthrop Cultural Council Presents: BEVERLY BRODY BARISANO – A RETROSPECTIVE OF ART WORK IN DIFFERENT MEDIUMS  at The Clock Tower Gallery at the E.B. Newton School & Cultural Center, 45 Pauline Street, September 12- October 28, 2011.  Schedule: Mondays & Wednesdays 5pm-8pm / Fridays 6pm-8pm / Sundays 2pm-5pm / Artist’s Reception Sunday, October 16, 1-5pm.
The Winthrop Art Association is having a Fall Day Trip to Ogunquit Museum of American Art on Sunday, October 23rd.  Lunch on your own at Perkins Cove, Ogunquit, Maine.  On the way back they will stop at the Kittery, Maine outlet shops.  The price is $35.00 per person.  A $15.00 deposit is required.  For more information, contact Dawn at 617-846-2644. _______________________________________________
Winthrop photpgrapher Kevin Welch is currently exhibiting bird portraits on canvas in the Basch Room. Mr. Welch is an active member of the local photographic community, working in scenic landscapes, nature and wildlife. The works, stunning in clarity and color, may be viewed whenever the Library is open. Proceeds generated from Mr. Welch’s photography benefit The Jimmy Fund. The Winthrop Improvement & Historical Association presents A Night With Mel Simons, a humorist, accordionist and musical historian. This event will be held on Saturday, October 1st from 7:30 to 8:30pm at the Barn at the Dean Winthrop House at 40 Shirley Street.  Donation is $12.  Reserve your tickets by calling 617-846-7421.  Only 100 seats available- Sold out 4 years in a row!  Light refreshments and raffles, fun for all!

The Winthrop Art Association is having a Holiday Fair on Saturday,  November 19th from 9:00am – 2:00pm at the EB Newton Cultural Center.  Original crafts and artwork will be available to purchase for the Holidays.  For information about the craft tables, contact Dawn at 617-846-2644.  Free photos with Santa will also be available!
