Howie Freedman, Owner of Beach Sales in Revere, generously donated two brand new stoves to the High School cooking room, specifically for the Life Skills Program, run by Chris Donnelly, Program Coordinator. The Life Skills Program is a fantastic program that enriches the lives of so many students with disabilities, as well as their peers and mentors. The Superintendent of Schools, along with the School Committee, Mr. Donnelly, and Mrs. Conlon, thank Mr. Freedman for his generous donation.
Parks and Recreation will be having their annual Fall Fair on Saturday, October 8th at Ingleside Park from 11am -3pm. (Rain date is October 9.) There will be pony and train rides, a pumpkin patch with pumpkin painting, moon bounce, food, entertainment and craft tables. Craft space is still available. The Medical Reserve Corps. will be holding their annual Emergency Preparedness Fair in conjunction with the Parks and Recreation Department's Fall Fair on Saturday, October 8th from 11-2. Information on Preparing for Disaster and Emergency will be available for distribution. Preparing your Pets for emergency will also be available. The Senior Center will be having their annual Harvest Fair on Saturday, October 22, 2011 from 10:00- 2:00. There will be pies for sale, strudel, crafts and a White Elephant table. Also, lunch will be available which will consist of a hot dog, chips, dessert, and beverage for $5.00. Come and join us and get into a "festive" fall mood!
HarborCOV, along with collaborative partners, will be hosting a vigil in the town of Winthrop on October 11th in order to raise awareness of Domestic Violence. This will take place from 5:30-6:30 at the E.B. Newton Cultural Center. Guest speakers will include Senator Petrucelli and Chief Delehanty. Everyone is welcome to attend and their presence and support is needed and much appreciated.
Parks and Recreation is having an art contest for kids! The winner will have his/her masterpiece published on the front cover of the Parks and Recreation’s 2011-2012 Winter Brochure. Kids in grades K-6 can enter. Only one entry per person and family members of town employees are not eligible. Submit original artwork to the Recreation Department at 151 Pauline Street, Winthrop. Please include your name, grade, address and telephone number. Deadline to enter is Thursday, October 27th.
Wednesday, October 19, 2011 will be the last day to register to vote for the upcoming Local Election on Tuesday, November 8, 2011. The Town Clerk’s Office will be open on October 19th, from 8am to 8pm for citizen convenience.
The only requirements to register to vote are that you are a citizen of the United States, a resident of Winthrop and will be 18 years old on or before Election Day. You may register in the Town Clerk’s Office, or you may request a mail-in registration form by phone or log onto http://www.sec.state.ma.us/ele/elestu/stuidx.htm. Those registering to vote using mail-in registration forms must have their forms postmarked no later than October 19th, 2011 in order to vote in the State Election.

The Winthrop Art Association is having a Fall Day Trip to Ogunquit Museum of American Art on Sunday, October 23rd. Lunch on your own at Perkins Cove, Ogunquit, Maine. On the way back they will stop at the Kittery, Maine outlet shops. The price is $35.00 per person. A $15.00 deposit is required. Winthrop photpgrapher Kevin Welch is currently exhibiting bird portraits on canvas in the Basch Room. Mr. Welch is an active member of the local photographic community, working in scenic landscapes, nature and wildlife. The works, stunning in clarity and color, may be viewed whenever the Library is open. Proceeds generated from Mr. Welch’s photography benefit The Jimmy Fund. The Winthrop Art Association is having a Holiday Fair on Saturday, November 19th from 9:00am – 2:00pm at the EB Newton Cultural Center.
