VOTERS MAY VOTE ABSENTEE OVER THE COUNTER BEGINNING MONDAY, JANUARY 23, 2012
Voters who are unable to vote on election-day because of physical disability, religious beliefs or travel may vote by absentee ballot. If you will be absent from Winthrop for an extended period of time, you may submit a single application for all elections occurring within the year the application is filed.
Applications for absentee ballots may be obtained from the Town Clerk or downloaded from the Town Clerk’s Web Page at www.town.winthrop.ma.us then click Departments and Town Clerk. Applications may be submitted in person or by mail. The voter, or a "family member" (father, mother, sister, brother, son, daughter, grandparent, grandchild, a spouse or person residing in the same household, in-laws, adopting parent or adopted child, stepparent or stepchild, aunt, uncle, niece or nephew), may submit an application. All absentee ballot applications must be
signed by the voter or a family member under the penalty of perjury before an absentee ballot will be made available.
Applications for absentee ballots must be received by the Town Clerk before 12:00 noon the day before an election. (A voter who is admitted to a health care facility after noon of the fifth day before an election may apply for a ballot up until the close of the polls and may request to have the ballot delivered.) Absentee ballots generally are available three weeks before an election.

February is Literacy Month! Kathy's Place Youth Center and 21st Century Afterschool Program is hosting Family Literacy Night on Tuesday, February 7, 2012, Kathy's Place Youth Center, 5:30pm-7:30pm. All ages are invited. Free pasta dinner & salad will be served from 6:00pm-6:30pm. There will be readings by Town Manager James McKenna; Superintendent of Schools John Macero; Marc Wallerce, owner of Winthrop Marketplace; Maureen Gill; Bobbie Finocchio, Principal of Arthur T. Cummings School; Ilene Pearson, Principal of William P. Gorman Fort Banks School; School Committee Member Mary Alice Sharkey; Police Chief Terry Delehanty and Fire Chief Paul Flanagan. There will also be raffles, crafts and games.

Congratulations to the High School Mock Trial Team! On Monday, January 30, 2012, under the direction of high school teacher Maria Flanagan, the team won their second competition at Chelsea District Court. Students who participated are Carla Aravena, Leah Cautillo, Jerry Driscoll, Sean Egan, Moriah Goldblatt, Jennie Maibor, Michael Mazzone, Frank Mazzuchelli, Brandi Noseworthy, Kelly Russo, Katelyn Tarrio and Mark Tracy. The next competition is scheduled for Wednesday, February 8th at 1:30pm at Chelsea District Court. Good luck!

There will be a Music Matters Festival on February 3rd at 6:00 pm at the Winthrop Lodge of Elks. Tickets are $15.00 in advance, $20.00 at the door. There will be three bands performing in one night. All proceeds will go to Music Matters, a non-profit organization dedicated to putting a music program back in the schools. Visit their Facebook page “The Music Matters Festival.”

The monthly informal networking event will be held Friday, February 3rd from 7:00pm to 9:00pm at the E.B. Newton Cultural Center on the 1st floor. This event is free and open to everyone, so bring a friend or two, your other half or a co-worker. You don’t have to be from Winthrop. Please no children. If you have business cards or marketing materials, please bring those. Light refreshments will be served.

There will be a “Family Game Night” with SimplyFun games on Friday, February 10th from 6:30pm- 8:30pm at the E.B. Newton Cultural Center on the 1st floor. This is a fundraiser to benefit CAPIC-Headstart. Simplyfun games are quick to learn and easy to play. For more information, call 617-462-5719.

This interactive training provides parents with the knowledge, tools and resources to effectively recognize and respond to bullying, whether the child is the aggressor, the target or a witness to bullying. ~Topics include:
• How to prevent, recognize and respond to bullying and cyber-bullying
• Effective parent strategies if a child is an aggressor, target or witness to bullying
• Approaches parents can use at home to reinforce the school curriculam
• Resources for additional help and information

Valentine’s Day is almost here!
There will be a Valentine Gift Sale at St. John’s Episcopal Parish Hall located at 222 Bowdoin St., Winthrop
