Moving up in a division has not slowed the sails of the Winthrop High School Sailing Team! Just before their third season started, the Vikings moved from the “C” Division to the “B” Division North.  They have competed in two team races against both Gloucester and Swampscott and have come up victorious in both. Their first home race will be April 25, 2012 against Gloucester.  The other teams that round out the “B” Division North are Boston Latin and Brookline High School.

The team is practicing and competing out of Cottage Park Yacht Club. The course will be set depending on the wind that day either east or west of the Club.  Anyone interested in watching Winthrop’s first home high school sailing race may do so from Cottage Park Yacht Club or the shoreline either west or east of the club.  Congratulations to our Winthrop Sailors!

Congratulations to our Girls' Lacrosse team, who tied Revere last night 4-4. Congratulations to our Boys' Lacrosse team, who won Revere in overtime 4-3.

Congratulations to high school students Michael Lessard, Nicole O'Brien, Alicia Delvento and Michael Ferrino who were chosen to attend the Freedoms Foundation Leadership Conference in Valley Forge, PA at the end of April.

The Native American Museum, created by 5th grade students in Mrs. Winters' art class, is up for display in the cafetorium at the Arthur T. Cummings School.

Congratulations to 6th grade student Gabriella Hinchion for receiving the "Make A Difference Award" presented by the John F. Kennedy Library & Museum to youth who serve their community. Great job Gabriella!

Come lend a hand to help beautify our park!
The Winthrop Beautification Committee, along with the Department of Public Works, is having a clean-up event at Hannaford/Fort Heath Park on Saturday, April 28th at 8:00am.  Volunteers needed!

Adopt-a-space at the Public Landing.
A few spots are still available which require routine maintenance like weeding and litter pick-up. The spaces are not that big, but are in need of regular upkeep. If interested, please call Fire Chief Paul Flanagan at 617-846-3474.

Mrs. Grayson, 4th grade teacher at the Cummings Elementary School, and the 21st Century after school program are selling bracelets that say Spread the Word to End the Word, and Light it up blue for autism. The bracelets are $2.00. They can be bought at the Cummings School. They are asking all businesses and families to put a blue light bulb on their porch at their business for the month of April to Light It Up Blue for Autism Awareness.

Parks and Recreation is offering a Heartsaver Course.
All classes have a class size limit of 6.
This Heartsaver Course teaches the basic skills of Adult, Child, and Infant CPR and how to use an AED (Automated External Defibrillator).
Students also learn about using barrier devices in CPR and giving first aid for choking.  The course teaches how to recognize the signs of four major emergencies: heart attack, stroke, cardiac arrest, and foreign body obstruction.
This is a 3.5-hour class.

The Winthrop Playmakers announce auditions for The Music Man

It’s time to start putting a beat to the music!

Thursday, April 12 7:00pm-9:30, & Thursday, April 19 from 6:30-9pm
Callbacks will be on Saturday, April 21 from 2-5pm

Please prepare 16 bars of two contrasting songs (and bring the sheet music) and be ready to learn a dance combination.

Rehearsals will be Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays beginning May 14th.
Performances are August 2-12.

SENIOR VOLUNTEER TAX PROGRAM DEADLINES

Applications are now available.

Applications can either be downloaded from the Town of Winthrop website: www.town.winthrop.ma.us, on the Council on Aging's webpage or picked up at the Winthrop Senior Center, Town Hall or Library.
All applications should be returned to the Senior Volunteer Service Program, Council on Aging, 35 Harvard St., Winthrop, MA~ 02152
Application deadlines for the fiscal year are as follows:

Applications will be accepted until the close of business on April 18, 2012 (see pg. 2 of 5).

Work will begin May/June, through the summer, September with the final date being October 15, 2012 (pg. 2 of 5).
SENIOR CITIZEN VOLUNTEER TAX PROGRAM

The Senior Citizen Volunteer Service/Tax Liability Reduction Program allows seniors (over the age of 60), to volunteer their services in exchange for a reduction in their property tax bill. ~Participants may earn a maximum reduction of $500.00 per fiscal year based on a rate per hour of service that cannot exceed the Commonwealth minimum wage.

Senior Volunteer Tax Program Requirements program requirements are:

You must be a taxpayer and 60 years of age or older during the tax year when the volunteering is completed and the tax reduction is credited.
To be credited, the volunteer must have an ownership interest and reside in the property year round.
Total reduction will not exceed $500.00.
Hours must be completed by October 15th of the credited year.
A CORI Release Form must accompany the application.

Other information:
Volunteers will be selected by lottery.
The Council on Aging Director will notify lottery winners of the drawing results and all other pertinent information shortly after the lottery.
Creditable volunteerism can start immediately following participant notification in conjunction with authorization by the Council on Aging Director.
If any selected volunteer is not able to fully participate, the Town may select another volunteer to participate up to the amount of hours not completed by the original participant.
If you are interested in this program, beginning March 14, 2012, you can pick up an application packet at the Senior Center, Town Hall or Library, or applications can be downloaded from the Town of Winthrop website: www.town.winthrop.ma.us
All applications should be returned to the Senior Volunteer Service Program, Council on Aging 35 Harvard St., Winthrop.

The lottery will be held at the Senior Center on Wednesday - April 25, 2012 (pg. 2 of 5)

On April 19th, a National Disability Advocate, Jon Rodis, will give a presentation on How to apply for Social Security Disability.  This will take place at 7:00 PM at the Senior Center, which is located at
35 Harvard Street in Winthrop.
He will also be available for questions.
This is a free service.

The Winthrop Seaside Striders 5k Foot Race will be held on Friday, June 8th at 6:30pm.  The course starts and ends at Winthrop High School.  
The Winthrop Seaside Striders have a missionto promote health and fitness in Winthrop youth through running and other endurance sports.  The Point Shirley Athletic Association and Seaside Striders sponsor the race.  This 5k (3.1 mile) road race is a USA Track & Field Certified Course.  The entry fee is $25.00 and all proceeds will be donated to Winthrop Parks and Recreation.  Make checks payable to Point Shirley Athletic Club.
