Congratulations to the WMS Drama Club! Under the direction of Tom Ferguson, they won a Silver Medal for their performance of "Bedtime Story" at the drama festival in Lynnfield.  Several actors earned All-Star Cast Awards for acting: Thomas Bernard, Kelsey Floyd, McKayla Norris, Rachel McInnis and Elizabeth Carsley. The cast also received an award for “Excellent Ensemble Work” along with the most prestigious award given at the festival - the Stage Manager's Award! It is presented by the Technical Director at the host school to the cast and crew who demonstrate the best preparedness, focus and cooperative spirit during the competition. Our Stage Manager, Lillian McGrail, accepted it. It is the second year in a row Winthrop Middle School, with Lillian as the Stage Manager, has won this award.

Cleaning the Bronze Veterans grave markers
Saturday, May 12, 2012 8:00am until noon

Lend a hand as we honor those who have defended this great Country. This coming Saturday, May 12th, from 8:00am until noon, there will be a cleaning of the bronze Veterans grave markers in the Winthrop Cemetery. Come on down, bring your children, work an hour or two or any time you can spare. Teach your children why we honor those who have defended our country.
Bring an old knife, a bucket, gloves and maybe a small brush or Richard Honan will have plenty of tools to hand out.
They will be meeting at the Cemetery entrance at the intersection of River Road, Cross Street and Bowdoin Street. There will be refreshments: coffee, Dunkin munchkins, soft drinks and water.

A new lighting system with spotlights was installed in the middle school auditorium.  Thank you to Drama Teacher Thomas Ferguson for arranging the installation, and the generous family who made the donation to support our theater arts programs!

Twenty-five 7th grade students in Mr. Farnsworth’s science class went on a field trip to Koch Institute for Cancer Research and the Whitehead Institute at MIT.  They had the opportunity to extract DNA from strawberries and hear about research and projects being conducted in the laboratory.  They also participated in a biology “flash mob” with students from other schools, which will be posted online as an educational video.  This was a very educational and fun event!

Congratulations to high school student Russell Trainor for being accepted to the 2012 Art All State, which will be held at the Worcester Art Museum on June 1st and June 2nd.  The Art All State application process is quite rigorous, requiring students to prepare a written application, several pieces of artwork and attend a personal interview.  This year they received 240 applications, with only 140 available positions.  Congratulations Russell on your significant achievement!

High school student Kelly Russo, has received the Outstanding Student Advocate Award from the Massachusetts Art Education Association (MAEA).  Ms. Russo will receive this award on May 24th at the Gardner Auditorium, Massachusetts State House.  Ms. Russo’s tireless dedication on behalf of Music Matters, is commendable and we are very proud of her.  Great job Kelly!

Sponsored by Viking Pride Foundation and the 11 Foundation, former Celtics player Chris Herren came to the High School on Friday, May 4th to speak with students about his battle with substance abuse.

Congratulations to 6th grade student Steven Holgerson for receiving this week’s Viking Valor Award!

Congratulations to all of the 7th grade Falcons who participated in Walk For Hunger on Sunday, May 6th.  They raised $2,854.25 for Project Bread.  Students who participated:  Gina Chalmers, Aaliya Rouzky, Rachel McInnis, Nicole Lerner, Amelia Fantasia, Elizabeth Carsley, Anna Reidster, Allison Proia, Haley Holden, Heidy Benson, Tony Soto, Santo Morosini, Valentina Ramirez, Juliana Rivera, Phillip Inconiglios, Courtney Dalton, Sara Bosco, Papillon DiMarzio, Abby Carleton, Danielle Bocchio, Will Holden, Marc Zampanti, Nick Napoli, Kailyn Ferrara, Enis Plavsic, Cameron Barker and Andrea Callanan.  Staff who participated:  7th grade teacher Shene Randall, 7th grade teacher Chris Farnsworth, 6th grade teacher Bernadette Carsley, nurse Carol Benson and secretary Patty Hames.  A special thanks to Ms. Randall for organizing this event for our students.  Great job!

The Middle School Talent Show was a huge success!  Julia Driscoll received the Grade 6 Shining Star Award for a martial arts performance.  Elizabeth Carsley, Courtney Dalton, Papillon DiMarzio and Alyssa Ferrara received the Grade 7 Shining Star Award for a tap dance.  Lexi Lever received the Grade 8 Shining Star Award for a vocal performance.  Nick Beshere took home Third Place for a vocal/dance performance.  Shannon Stimpson received Second Place for a vocal performance.  Emily Kilroy received First Place for a dance performance.  Congratulations to all our winners and participants!

Winthrop High School Drama Club proudly presents “Footloose”!   The musical will be performed this Friday, May 11th at 7:00pm, and Saturday, May 12th at 2:00pm and 7:00pm.  Tickets will be sold at the door –
$10.00 for adults and $7.00 for senior citizens and students.

Students at the Arthur T. Cummings School participated in “Walk For Cancer” during gym classes last week in honor of 4th Grade teacher Leanne Silverman.  Nearly $500.00 was raised for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute!

“Ready, Set, Wear It!” Life Jacket World Record Day!

Residents of Winthrop will gather to set a world record for the most life jackets worn and inflatable life jackets inflated.
Learn how to properly wear, rearm and repack~inflatable life vests.
Inherently Buoyant PFD will also be demonstrated for Winthrop youth sailing groups~and paddle craft operators.

Winthrop’s summertime French Square Market – to be held every Thursday, from 4pm to 8pm, in June, July, and August – will be a great opportunity for local businesses, food purveyors, artists, artisans, and craftspeople to showcase their wares.

The open-air market will host approximately 20 vendors each week. Only Winthrop-based vendors are invited to attend. The Winthrop Marketplace has made an early, firm commitment to be at French Square for each of the 13 weeks that the Market will be held.

“This is a terrific opportunity for all of our local food businesses – whether retail, online, or home-based – to show their stuff,” says Marc Wallerce, owner of the town’s popular food emporium. “I encourage every food business to get involved in this first year of the French Square Market.”

The Market will transform the French Square area of the town center: bistro tables with colorful umbrellas and chairs will be set up each week; vendors will have booth space around the Square. Traffic on Jefferson Street will be redirected during the hours of the Market but residents will continue to have full access to the center business district for the duration of the event

Local artists and craftspeople from Winthrop’s vibrant community of artists and artisans are also encouraged to participate. “This open air market will provide new opportunities for our local artists to showcase their work and connect with visitors,” observes Joanne Hillman, Chair of the Winthrop Cultural Council. ~“Artists’ presence will help enliven French Square and further strengthen our town’s creative economy.  And, I think people will be surprised and delighted by the quality of the work of our homegrown artists.”

“This is a great vendor opportunity for all types of Winthrop businesses. ~The fee to participate is minimal, making it quite affordable,” said Eric Gaynor, Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce. ~“While this is something new for the town, the open-air market concept has been very successful in other communities.”

The French Square Market is a collaboration of several Winthrop organizations, including the Art Association, Parks & Recreation, Chamber of Commerce, the Department of Public Works, Town Manager, and Cultural Council.

Vendors can apply for space by going to, and downloading the two-page application. Copies are also available at the Library, Chamber of Commerce, and Town Manager’s Office at Town Hall. ~All the details are included on the website. The deadline for applications to be received is ***MAY 15th ***. All interested vendors are encouraged to apply. ~Call 617-846-9898 with any questions.

High School student Alicia DelVento was elected as President for the 2012 Northeast Massachusetts Association of Student Councils.  Great job Alicia!

The Postal Carriers will be having their annual national food drive on Saturday, May 12. If you leave a bag of nonperishable and nonexpired items on your porch or front steps, the Postal Carrier will pick them up that day and drop them off at the Winthrop Community Food Pantry. The Postal Drive is the largest Community Service Activity in the United States.

Spring Fling!
On May 18th there will be a Spring Fling Dance at Kathy's Place Youth Center.  This is for kids in pre-k to 5th grade.  The dance will run from 6:00 to 8:30 PM.

The Winthrop Housing Authority Board of Directors will be conducting
a Community Forum.
This forum presents an opportunity for the residents and public to bring matters to the attention of the elected and appointed officials of the Housing Authority.

Wednesday, May 16th at 3:00pm
O’Connell Hall, 9 Golden Drive, Winthrop

The Chairman of the board of directors will preside over the forum, and provide a brief overview of the Authority and its role in providing safe, affordable housing in compliance with State regulations.

The remainder of the meeting will be left in the hands of the public who are encouraged to ask questions.

Parks and Recreation upcoming events:


Micro T Ball (Ages 2 –4) operated by Knucklebones-   Parents & children learn to play like big leaguers. 6 Week program brings a progression of T-ball skills & game play. Program begins Thursday, May 10th - 5:30pm – 6:30pm at Ingleside Park. $95.00

Cheerleading Clinic- Get ready for the fall season!  Children in grades 2-7 (entering Grades 3-8 in the fall).  Clinic will run Monday through Friday, June 11-15 from 5:30pm – 7:30pm at Winthrop High School gymnasium. Cost is $90.00.  Learn basic to intermediate skills & techniques, stunts, and tumbling. Learn choreographed cheers and dance to perform for family and friends on the last night of clinic.

Soccer Clinic- presented by British Soccer Camp/Challenger Sports – Clinic runs Monday through Friday, June 18 – June 22.  Ages 3-4 from 9:00am –10:00am for $80.00, Ages 5-8 from 10:00am – 11:30am for $95.00, and Ages 9-14 from 12:00pm – 3:00pm for $135.00.  Fee includes Ball and T-Shirt.


HeartSaver CPR Class  - Class is Saturday, May 19th from 9:00am – 12:30pm.
Cost is $75.00. Class will be held at Winthrop Parks & Recreation center.

Winthrop Seaside Striders 5k Foot Race – Winthrop Seaside Striders have a mission to promote health and fitness in Winthrop through running and other endurance sports. Join us on Friday, June 8th at the Winthrop High School. Number pick up on Race Day is 4:30pm – 6:00pm and race begins at 6:30pm. Race details and online registration at  Cost is $25.00 and guaranteed t-shirt to 1st 200 Entrants. All proceeds are donated to Winthrop Parks and Recreation.
