Winthrop Beach Nourishment Project-
Phase 3 Northern Section

TWO WEEK LOOK-AHEAD
April 28, 2014 – May 9, 2014

The following work items will begin occurring for the Winthrop Beach project.
You can expect to see these activities over the next two weeks.

Saugus:
Strip and sreen soil
Re-stripe Route 107 and add construction signage
Begin removing material from southern site

Crest Avenue:
Install curbing in lot
Pave existing parking lot
Install new wheelchair ramps and crosswalks
Pave portion of Crest Ave directly in front of parking lot
Install signs and stripe lot and roadway
Remove trees

Winthrop Beach:
Reconstruct Pearl Avenue revetment
Repair Groin #3 (opposite Wave Way Avenue)
Dismantle Groin #4 (opposite Coral Avenue)
Armor stone delivery
Begin delivery of beach material

The week of May 5 will be the first week that beach material is delivered to Winthrop Beach. The trucking operation will only take place Monday through Friday, 9am -3pm. During these hours, parking along Crest Avenue in Winthrop will be relocated to the new parking lot. After 3 pm, street parking may resume.

Questions or concerns about the project should be directed to DCR Resident Engineer Steve Colometo, at the DCR trailer behind the DCR bathhouse on Winthrop Shore Drive, by visit or phone (617-539-4957) during regular business hours, Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. In case of an emergency, contact 911 or DCR’s 24/7 emergency hotline at the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency at 508-820-1428.

WINTHROP HOUSING AUTHORITY
Board of Directors will be conducting a
COMMUNITY FORUM

The forum presents an opportunity for the residents and public to bring matters to the attention of the elected and appointed officials of the Housing Authority.

Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at 2:00 PM
O’Connell Hall, 9 Golden Drive, Winthrop

The Chairman of the Board of Directors will preside over the forum,
and provide a brief overview of the Authority and its role in providing
safe, affordable housing in compliance with State regulations. The remainder of the meeting will be left in the hands of the public who are encouraged to ask questions.

Winthrop Ferry Rider Forum

Winthrop Ferry riders and local residents are invited to attend an informational meeting about the Winthrop Ferry program and the upcoming ferry season on Tuesday, May 6 at 7 p.m. at the Ferry Terminal Building at the Winthrop Public Landing.

The purpose of the meeting is to explain the current situation with the ferry program, what the plans are going forward and to discuss possible options for providing water borne service to Boston and the Islands in the upcoming season.

The town will be looking for information from riders, related to how often they would plan to ride, where they prefer debarkation and at which times travel would be best.

We need to hear from you, in order to have the best information possible as we discuss alternative service for the upcoming season.

Anyone who wishes to participate in this session, but is not available to attend on Tuesday evening can email the Assistant to the Town Manager/ Grants Manager Joseph Domelowicz at jdomelowicz@town.winthrop.ma.us.

Plastic Pollution Forum
The Friends of Belle Isle Marsh will present a Monday Night Forum on “Plastic Pollution” at the Orient Heights Yacht Club on Monday, May 12th at 7 PM.~~ Michael Rowinsky, the featured speaker, will talk about the devastating impact of plastic on fish and wildlife, and the “plastic soup” that is found in the ocean.~~ He has studied the “Great Pacific Garbage Patch” which is composed of non-biodegradable marine litter, including plastic, which floats on ocean currents between Hawaii and the west coast of the United States.~~ Charles Moore, who discovered the Patch in 1997, continues to raise awareness through his environmental organization, the Algalita Marine Research Foundation.
Michael Rowinsky will also discuss his research with Charles Moore at the Algalita Foundation.~~ He graduated from California State University with a B.S. in Marine Biology.~ He teaches Biology, AP Environmental Science, Genetics, Anatomy and Physiology in Connecticut.~ Mike enjoys hunting and fishing, gardening, kayaking, canning, and SCUBA diving.~ He’s a naturalist at the Sherwood Island State Park in Westport.~~ Mike enjoys experimenting with sustainable methods of gardening, such as aquaponics and hydroponics.

Course Information

This year's course will be the same as last year, including a quarter mile of trail running by Lewis Lake and back on to River Road. COURSE starts at Winthrop High School. Left onto Franklin St. Right onto Revere St. Right onto Hutchinson. Right onto Crest Ave., which then becomes Winthrop Shore Drive. Right onto Beacon St. Right onto Shirley St. Left on Cutler St across Veterans Rd to trail across Lewis Lake Park. Right onto River Rd. Right onto Cross St. Right into football field, onto track. Finish on track to thunderous applause.

Camp Fort is back by popular demand!~ If you have a student entering kindergarten, first, second or third grade, the perfect program is available to you!~~ The program which runs from July 8th-August 14th, is located right at the school on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8:30-12:30.~ The cost for the entire session is~$350.~ An information session will held from 6:30-7:00 followed by registration from 7:00-8:00 p.m.~on Thursday May 1st in the Gorman Fort Banks School Multi-Purpose Room.~~Caution: Enrollment will be limited to first registered, first enrolled.

From Neighbor2Neighbor Fundraiser
Support Winthrop neighbors in need while listening to the award-winning Squeezebox Stompers in a night of folk, blues, Cajun, and Zydeco music. The fundraising event will be held on Saturday, May 3rd from 7-10 PM at the DeLeo Senior Center, 35~Harvard St. in Winthrop. The suggested donation is $10; proceeds from the event support Winthrop’s FromNeighbor2Neighbor organization which provides emergency funds for Winthrop residents facing crisis situations. This fun-filled, all-ages event will include raffle prizes with coffee, tea, soft drinks and desserts available for purchase.~ This program is supported in part by a grant from the Winthrop Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.
