Due to the Memorial Day holiday, street sweeping will be from Monday, May 19th through Friday, May 23rd on your regularly scheduled trash day. Normally, street sweeping is the last full week of the month.
Congratulations to the Winthrop Middle School Drama Society on receiving a Silver Medal for their performance of “Seventeen” in the State competition last weekend! Congratulations to Micaela Grimes, McKayla Norris and Owen Kelley who received Acting Awards! Hats off to Mr. Ferguson and the cast & crew. Great job!
Congratulations to 7th grade student Felicia Epifania for winning the school-wide WMS Spelling Bee! Great job Felicia! Hats off to finalists Katherine Silva and Micaela Grimes! Keep up the great work!
The Stars Residency in Art Grant has earned the William P. Gorman Fort Banks School and incredible distinction from the Massachusetts Cultural Council. Our first and second grade students have received second honors in the 2014 Secretary’s Award for Excellence in Energy and Environment Education based on their accomplishments and creation of the Winthrop by the Sea Marine Mural. They also earned a distinction from the Speaker of the House in recognition of this award. A special thanks to Cara Huberman for her efforts with this project. Nice work!
WMS Bullying Awareness Committee is organizing a “WMS School Pride Night” on Thursday, May 29th at 6:00pm. This evening will showcase the Winthrop Middle School Talent Show. Students, staff and community members are working on this special event. Mark your calendars!
Viking Pride Foundation proudly presents “The Final Countdown WHS Goes to Valhalla” on Saturday, June 28th at Winthrop High School. Doors open at 7:00pm. Tickets are available at www.vikingpride.org and can also be purchased at Christopher’s Flowers, Fab’s Liquors, and the Law Office of Christos Tsiotos.
WHS Seniors’ Art Show will be held on Thursday, May 15th from 6:00pm-8:00pm in Room 237B at Winthrop High School. If you cannot make it to the Reception, the show will be on exhibit through May 22nd during regular school hours.
Winthrop Beach Nourishment Project - Phase Three, Northern Section - Two Week Look-Ahead

The first truckload of sand arrived at Winthrop Beach on Thursday May 8th. The trucking effort will be ramping up over the next week and by the week of May 19th should be in full force. As a reminder, the trucking hours are between 9 am and 3 pm, during which time all parking along Crest Avenue in Winthrop will be relocated to within the newly expanded municipal parking lot.
Questions or concerns about the project should be directed to DCR Resident Engineer Steve Colometo, at the DCR trailer behind the DCR bathhouse on Winthrop Shore Drive, by visit or phone (617-539-4957) during regular business hours, Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. In case of an emergency, contact 911 or DCR’s 24/7 emergency hotline at the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency at 508-820-1428.

Cleaning the Bronze Veterans grave markers

Lend a hand and honor those who have given their life in defense of this great Country. On Saturday, May 17th, we will be cleaning the bronze Veterans grave markers in the Winthrop Cemetery. Come on down to the cemetery on Saturday and show that you care. Bring your children and educate them why we take the time to honor those who gave their life defending the United States of America.
Bring an old knife, a bucket, gloves and maybe a small brush or Richard Honan will have extra tools to hand out.
We will be meeting at the Cemetery entrance at the intersection of River Road, Cross Street and Bowdoin Street. There will be light refreshments, coffee, Dunkin Munchkins, soft drinks and water.
The Friends of Belle Isle Marsh will sponsor "May in the Marsh Festival" on Saturday, May 17th from noon to 2 PM at Belle Isle Marsh.~ The event will feature horse-drawn hayrides, "The Creature Teacher" with live animals, and the music of Billy Goodspeed, back by popular demand."~ ~Free and open to the public.~ In the event of rain, the Festival will be cancelled.~ Call 617-921-4598 for information.
The Winthrop Board of Health would like to announce the 2014 Annual Rabies Clinic will be held on Saturday, May 17th from 9am to 11am at the old DPW Yard off Winthrop Street behind the Methodist Church. Cost is $10

6th Annual Winthrop Town Wide Yard Sale

Summer is on its way! Registration is now available for the Summer Park Program which runs from July 1st through August 15th from 8:30am-1:00pm. Cost is $299.00 if registered by June 26th and $319.00 after June 26th. Register online at www.winthroprec.com . The extended day summer program is available as well and runs June 25th through August 29th from 7:30am- 5:30pm. Registration is required at the recreation office but you can download the registration packet from the website. Winthrop Parks and Recreation introduces NFL Flag Football for children ages 8-14. Program runs from June 1st through July 30th on Wednesday and Sunday evenings~at Ingleside Park.~ Registration is open now at www.winthroprec.com and closes on June 1st. Placement clinic will take place at 4pm on June 1st at Ingleside Park. Child must be registered to participate in placement clinic.~
The program will consists of 3 groups, 14 & under, 12 & under, and 10 & under.~ Games will be played at Ingleside Park on Wednesdays and Sunday between 5pm - 8pm. Cost is $85.00 per player.
