Bill Schmidt, BA, MPA, MAC, is the current Chair of the Board of Health, appointed to the Board in 2016. He served for over twenty years as a Manager at the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and at MassHealth, and was the Recipient of a Commonwealth Citation for Outstanding Performance in 2007. Mr. Schmidt holds degrees from Columbia College, the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, and Suffolk University. He is a former Board Member of Common Cause Massachusetts and received its Citizenship Award in 2010. Mr. Schmidt is a Professional Consultant in Communications and Government Relations, primarily to Non-Profit Organizations in the Human Services Field.
Vice Chair: Astrid Weins, MD, PhD
Astrid Weins, MD, PhD, Vice Chair of the Board of Health, is an Assistant Professor of Pathology at Harvard Medical School with an active clinical practice in Kidney Pathology at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. Dr. Weins received her Medical Degree from Ludwig Maximilians University, Munich, Germany, and holds a PhD in Cell Biology from Ruprecht Karls University, Heidelberg, Germany. She runs an NIH-funded translational research lab at Brigham and Women's Hospital with a focus on implementing novel innovative diagnostic techniques in kidney pathology, and is a nationally recognized expert in kidney pathobiology. Originally a native of Germany, Dr. Weins made her home in Winthrop in 2009.
Susan Maguire, RN, Member of the Board of Health, graduated from Catherine Labouré School of Nursing, and began her nursing career at Tufts Medical Center. In 2015, after 36 years, she retired from the Executive Office of Health and Human Services (EOHHS). While at EOHHS, she conducted quality of care, medical necessity, and detection of fraud reviews of MassHealth providers. With the advent of managed-care, she coordinated quality improvement initiatives for a large health plan.
