At approximately 4:30 PM today heavy winds knocked down telephone poles on Shirley Street resulting in many National Grid electric customers to be without power. Chief Flanagan has been informed by National Grid that due to the extent of the damage and the continuing strong winds, the majority of the customers who currently are without power will not see their power restored until as late as mid-morning tomorrow. Anyone seeking shelter, or has any other emergency needs resulting from this outage, please call 911. At this time there is not a shelter opened, but one will be opened if needed. The Winthrop Fire Department has an Engine and crew stationed in Church Square by the Point Shirley Association Building and will remain as long as Shirley St is blocked, and until the power is restored.
